The primary difference between step down
and step up transformers is that in step up
the voltage is raised at the output end
whereas in step-down transformer it is
dropped, and that is what their names
suggest. The output voltage rating in step-up
transformers is generally 11000 volts or more,
whereas it is 110 volts, 24 volts, 20 volts, etc. On
a step down transformer, it means that a step
up transformer can increase the voltage from
220V-11KV or more whereas a step-down
transformer can reduce it from 440V to 220V
or 220V to 110V, 110V to 24V, and so on.
Winding And Current
There is a difference in the windings of both
step up and step-down transformers. The
primary winding has a high voltage winding,
while the secondary winding in a step up
transformer is a high voltage winding. And
thus the current is high on the secondary
winding in step down and low in step-up
transformer. So, if you are looking for a

Size of the conductor
In a step-up transformer, the primary

across the secondary coil.

The winding turns in the primary and secondary winding determine the
amount of voltage change at the transformer end. For example, if the
primary coil has 50 turns and the secondary coil has 100 turns, the ratio of
these turns, i.e. 1:2, will determine the percentage of input to the output
voltage.
Thus if you put 220 volts on the information, you will get 440 volts at the
voltage output. Similarly, the primary coil will have more turns in the booster
transformer as compared to the secondary coil.
