Student Portfolio
for Tracking Student Progress with
English Language Arts
Aligned to the Common Core Standards
Learning Goals & Scales
These portfolio pages were created for use with learning goals and scales,
based on the research and suggestions of Robert J. Marzano, in The Art and
Science of Teaching: A Comprehensive Framework for Effective Instruction.
Learning Goals and scales follow this basic structure;
Scale/Date
Learning Goals
4
The student can demonstrate mastery, apply the standard in an advanced way,
and explain it to others.
“I understand this concept so well that I can apply it to other problems, and
explain it to you in my own words!”
3
The student can demonstrate mastery of this standard.
* “I understand what is going on here and I can show it!” *

0
The student has some background knowledge in the fundamental concepts of this
standard.
“I am not sure if I understand this completely, but I have enough confidence to try
and figure it out.”
The student has liFle background knowledge in the fundamental concepts of this
standard.
“This looks like something I’ve learned before, but I’m not sure how I can use my
knowledge to do this.”
Even with help, the student did not complete any part of this task.
“This is new to me and I cannot do these problems right now.”
Determining a student’s position on the scale is done when a teacher
decides on the skill or expectation for each level, and assesses the students in
some informal or formal way. Look for the corresponding ELA Posters with
Marzano Scales for examples of what kinds of skills would represent
mastery at each level of a scale. These specific scales were developed using
the progression of content in ELA standards from one grade level to the next.
They also incorporate levels of Bloom’s Depth of Knowledge and Marzano’s
Taxonomy for defining the tasks at each level.

Student Portfolio
These student portfolio pages were created for students to record and
organize examples of their mastery of the ELA standards aligned to Common Core.
Examples of mastery could include assessments, classroom work, projects, or written work
explaining their learning. These pages are meant to be dividers for student work
portfolios. The pages are divided into clusters and include a simplified learning goal,
reflection sheet, and coloring boxes for scales 1-4.
Portfolio Assembly:
1. Copy divider pages back to back by matching the standards. Color paper is helpful.
Front Side of Divider Page (Colored Scales)
Back Side (Student Reflections)
1. Remove sections labeled “cut out.”
2. Organize assessment pages or student work samples into clusters.
3. Place in a binder using completed dividers to separate each cluster.

Student Reflections
The purpose of learning goals and scales are to help students become aware of their level
of proficiency and progress as they learn. Student reflections go one step further by asking
students to verbalize their own interpretation of their progress. Students have the chance to
acknowledge their strengths, weaknesses, goals, and any factors that helped or hindered that
progress.
When you begin teaching a new topic, give students a pre-assessment that gives
them an idea of what scale they are beginning on. Let them review their pre-assessment
and then make 1-2 goals per cluster, so they feel that it is realistically accomplishable.
They can color in their starting place and make goals depending on what you have time
for. Keep them in a weekly work folder, or somewhere they can revisit their goals.
After the post-unit assessment, let students review their progress again and reflect
on their goals. They can circle one response; “I...reached my goal!”, “...made progress”,
or “...am still working on this.” Then have students write reflection statements, and
offer reasons for outcomes. See below for some possible leading statements. You’ll get
the best results if the reflections are done in close proximity to when the assessments or
work samples were completed. Their work will be fresh in their minds!
“ I made progress in this goal because...”
“ I made progress in _____ easily because...”
“ This goal was difficult because...”
“ I am still working on understanding this standard because...”
“ I have mastered this standard and my next goal is...”
“I think my greatest strength in this area is...”
“ I think the hardest skill for me to master is/was ______ because...”
“ One area I want to improve in the most is...”
“ This topic was my favorite to learn about because...”
“ I am proud of my work in this standard because...”
“ One thing that would help me to improve in this are is...”
