Narrative Writing
Task 1: Structure of Narrative Writing
What is Narrative writing ?
A narrative is a story.
There are two types of
narrative :
Narrative – A fictional story
Personal Narrative - A true
story about an event that
happened in your life
Opening /Introduction
Start with a description of a
character, setting or event
add in a detail which you link
back to at the end. Make sure
that the mood you create in
this paragraph anticipates the
climax of your story.
It was an unusually rainy June….
John yawned and stretched
Unless you looked carefully, it was just
another front door.
Complication
Something happens to move the
story towards the climax
Unsurprisingly/ surprisingly
Things took a sinister turn when
“Why don’t we….” Suggested George,
innocently enough
Development
Something further happens to
reach the climax
Inevitably
Just then
The weather changed
The car swerved
Unexpectedly we turned left
Start your thinking here ,Its climax The climax – the whole point of
the story
The most exciting thing in the story
happens here
You cannot start planning until you
know what the climax is. Nothing
happens in your story which is not linked
to the climax.
Exposition
Resolve your climax happily or
unhappily.
Ending
Return to the detail at the
beginning. It has to have changed
in some significant way to
symbolise the change in the story.
Create a mood that makes it clear
how the reader should feel.
It was an unusually June…. The sun
broke out from behind the clouds
John yawned and stretched…. John fell
asleep
Unless you looked carefully, it was just
another front door….. He closed the
door quietly behind him
