In November 1918 and after the approval of the peace settlement to stop the world war I which was so harsh on Germany, the United States president (Woodrow Wilson) envisioned that the peace settlement of WWI had some unfair points that may lead to a new war and a new conflict. The United States president had a gigantic hope in the league of nation to avoid a knew war scenario. Why did the League of nation fail? The most important points that made the United States failed to join the league are two reasons; one: most Americans wanted to avoid European involvement, two: United States senate’s refused to approve the treaty of Versailles, and by that the U.S couldn’t join the league of nation which made a huge effect of the competition of the league and it weakened it. History In between 1919 and 1924, Germany was forced to pay reparations of the war damages to France by the treaty of Versailles. The Allies reparations coast was around $33 billion which was a humorous bill. Germany paid its first payment by 1921 but after a year a problem in financial crisis faced the German government which led them to stop paying reparations. France’s aim from the invasion was to extract the unpaid reparations and to take control of key industries and natural resources. Occupation of the Ruhr worsened the economic crisis in Germany. The German government ordered workers to follow a policy of passive resistance which is refusing to work or co-operate with the foreign troops and in return the government continued to pay their wages, With the German governments support, the workers went on strike which means that their work would go for a stoppage. The German government mainly paid their salaries by printing more paper money. This only added to the inflation and rise in prices that had already begun in Germany by the end of the war. The German mark soon became worthless. In 1914, 4.2 marks 1 U.S dollar. By the end of November 1923 the ratio had reached an incredible 4.2 trillion marks to equal 1 U.S dollar. History Germany began to seek a way out of this disaster. In August 1924, an international commission adopted a new plan for reparations. The Dawes plan, named after the American banker who chaired the commission, the plan reduced reparations and it then coordinated Germany’s annual payments with its ability to pay. The Dawes plan also granted a 200 million loan for German recovery. This loan soon opened the door to heavy American investment in Europe. History 1.
