Lesson Plan Template T: Threading a needle TA: A dozen 9th graders at an all-boys high school in a required “Home and Careers” class GO: Learner Will Demonstrate the Ability (LWDA) to thread a needle within 3 minutes, without pricking or stabbing themselves or others with the needle IO’s: Identify the body of the needle, the eyelet, and the tip. Recognize that the needle tip is sharp and must be handled with care. Understand that the thread is advanced through one side of the eyelet ½-¾” and pulled through until the thread is of even length on either side of the eyelet. Perform the task of threading a needle in under three minutes. ED: Demonstrate how to thread a needle without pricking themselves or others in three minutes or less C: Explain that the tip of the sewing needle is sharp and can cause harm. Identify the eyelet of the needle and explain that the thread is advanced ½-¾” through one side of the eyelet. Grab the thread at one end with your dominant hand. Hold the needle vertically by the middle of its body with the eyelet facing upwards. Insert the thread into the eyelet and advance the thread through the eyelet about ½-¾”. Once the thread is inserted ½-¾” let go of the thread while ensuring it doesn’t fall back out of the eyelet and continue to pull the string through the eyelet until about half of its length is on either side of the eyelet. Practice until the needle can be threaded in three minutes or less. TS: Teacher directed demonstration LA: Performing the act of threading a needle RM: A piece of thread cut to a predetermined length and a needle BL: Either allow extra time for practice or teach them how to tie a knot at the end of the string to secure it R&R:
