Math 63 Project 2: Engine Design
Materials: Cardstock Paper, Rulers, Compasses, Scissors, Tape
Directions: Use the formula to design and build a scale model of one cylinder for an engine with a volume of 412 in3.
An engine’s volume or Displacement (D) is D =
2
πb sc
4
D = engine displacement measured in cubic inches
b = bore (diameter of the cylinder) measured in inches
s = stroke (distance that the piston travels) measured in inches
c = number of cylinders
Choose a scale to build one of your cylinders with that allows it to be cut out of one piece of normal paper. Include the
full size dimensions of the cylinder, how many cylinders your design employs and the scale that you used.
