1 - IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
SINGLE USE FACEMASKS
1 - IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
SINGLE USE FACEMASKS
Over 2 billion tonnes off facemasks end up in landfill every year
1 - IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
SINGLE USE FACEMASKS
o Made with Polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyl and its derivatives
o These materials are used to form a thin layer of plastic on the facemasks and
is blended in with the fabric
o Facemasks cannot be recycled using conventional recycling methods and as a
result they cannot be put in blue recycling boxes in our homes
o As a result, single use facemask are thrown in the garbage and end up in
landfills.
o Polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyl are not biodegradable, hence cannot be
broken down by micro-organisms.
1 - IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM
SINGLE USE FACEMASKS
Specialized recycling
process not accessible
Since the facemask cannot be recycled
using conventional methods, they end
up in landfills. Since we cannot easily
recycle/re-use facemasks, recycling
process is not sustainable
Material is not
biodegradeable
Since the material is not biodegradable,
and the masks eventually end up in
landfills, material is not sustainable

o We performed a google patent Search
o 3200 Results with keywords “Chitin”
o 1020 results with keywords “biodegradable facemask chitin”
o Reviewed large samples size to ensure no patent infringement present in our
design.
o Our proposal differers from existing patents becasue of our chitin blends with
other materials, and the percentage of chitin present in blend
