MOVEMENT. RAISED IN A QUAKER HOUSEHOLD, ANTHONY WENT ON TO WORK AS A
TEACHER. SHE WAS ALSO A KEY FIGURE IN THE ANTI-SLAVERY MOVEMENT LEADING UP
TO THE CIVIL WAR, DURING WHICH TIME SHE PARTNERED WITH ELIZABETH CADY
STANTON. TOGETHER THEY WOULD EVENTUALLY LEAD THE NATIONAL AMERICAN
WOMAN SUFFRAGE ASSOCIATION AND HELP SECURE VOTING RIGHTS FOR WOMEN IN
THE UNITED STATES IN 1920, FOURTEEN YEARS AFTER ANTHONY’S DEATH.
WILMA RUDOLPH (1940- 1994) WAS A SICKLY CHILD WHO HAD TO WEAR A BRACE
ON HER LEFT LEG. SHE OVERCAME HER DISABILITIES TO COMPETE IN THE 1956
SUMMER OLYMPIC GAMES, AND IN 1960, SHE BECAME THE FIRST AMERICAN WOMAN
TO WIN THREE GOLD MEDALS IN TRACK AND FIELD AT A SINGLE OLYMPICS. LATER IN
LIFE, SHE FORMED THE WILMA RUDOLPH FOUNDATION TO PROMOTE AMATEUR
ATHLETICS. RUDOLPH IS REMEMBERED AS ONE OF THE FASTEST WOMEN IN TRACK AND

THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. IN HER LIFETIME, BUTLER CHANGED THE LANDSCAPE OF
SCIENCE FICTION AND COMPLETELY IGNORED SOCIETY’S LIMITS ON BLACK
AUTHORSHIP. SHE IS THE FIRST SCIENCE FICTION WRITER AND ONLY PERSON OF ANY
RACE OR GENDER TO RECEIVE THE MACARTHUR FELLOWSHIP (MORE COMMONLY
