CRISPR Mini Debate

Instructions:
1. Say your number (1 or 2) in order and this will be the group you will be in.
2. Place your desks on the side of the classroom, so you are together with your group.
3. Group 1 will be pro designer babies and group 2 will be anti-designer babies.
4. It is okay if your personal views do not align with the group you are in, this is just a
classroom discussion to see how someone could view a moral/ethical dilemma from
opposing sides.
5. Read the Designer Babies Pros and Cons article with your group.
6. You just need to read the introduction section and the pros or cons section according to
your group.
7. Group 1 will read the introduction and pros sections, while group 2 will read the
introduction and cons section.
8. After reading, write down some ideas that you would like to discuss in the discussion.
9. Use the brainstorming section below!
10. When it is time for discussion, state your side and why for 2 minutes, then let the other
group do the same.
11. You will then have a 3-minute rebuttal to begin delving into why you support your side.
12. After your 3 minutes, you cannot speak until the other group has finished their 3
minutes.
13. You can discuss with your group what you would like to mention when you can speak
again.
14. We will keep switching until the time is up (about 15 minutes of discussion).
15. I am HIGHLY suggesting that if you want credit for participating in this discussion, you
MUST speak at least ONCE!
16. I will rate based on participation and facts that you can use from your guided notes, PPT
slides, and pros and cons article.
17. Please put your name at the top of this handout because I will collect it at the end of the
discussion to see your thought process through this discussion.
