Learning Intention We are learning to…. • Identify the layers of the Earth. • Recognizes that the Earth’s crust is made of rocks and soil. Success Criteria I will be successful if I am able to …. • Identify the layers of the Earth. • Make a model out of clay or using colour papers and label the layers of the Earth. The Layers of the Earth Four main layers of the Earth The Earth’s Layers are divided into four main layers. *Crust *Mantle *Outer Core *Inner Core Crust The Earth’s crust is like the skin of an apple. It is very thin compared to the other three layers. The crust makes up 1% of the Earth. The crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called plates. ▪ Composed of mainly oxygen, silicon, aluminum and small amounts of other elements. Mantle The mantle is the layer below the crust. It is the largest layer of the Earth. Consists of very dense rocks which are rich in metals such as magnesium and iron. Outer Core * The core of the Earth is like a ball of very hot metals. * The outer core is liquid. * The outer core is made up of molten iron and nickels. and is very dense. Outer Core Inner Core * The inner core of the Earth has temperatures and pressures so great that the metals are squeezed together and are not able to move. * The inner core is a solid. Today’s Activity Make a model out of clay or using colour papers and label the layers of the Earth. • • Inner layer: Red • Outer layer: Orange • Mantle: yellow • Crust: brown • Water: Blue • Land: Green Land Mantle Crust Outer layer Inner layer water Step by Step procedure • Step 1:Roll all colors of play dough in to a ball. Take your orange color and flatten it out into a pancake shape. •Step 2: Place the red ball (inner core) into the center of the orange pancake you just made. Fold over the edges, pinching and rounding things out until you have an orange ball with a red ball in the center. Step by Step procedure cont… • Step 3:Repeat the previous step with the yellow. Flatten it out, then place the orange ball inside the yellow pancake, folding over the edges and rounding it out to make a ball. •Step 4: Repeat and continue for the crust layer and the water. Step by Step procedure (cont… • Step 5 :Break up bits of green to make land and press it into your earth to represent the continents. Smooth out the edges a bit to keep things round. •Step 6: Cut the model into one fourth (1/4) using a butter knife or a ruler (get help from an adult) Label the layers of the Earth as shown below.
