The Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) was set up as a National Institute jointly by the Ministry of
Commerce, Government of India and the Indian Packaging Industry and allied interests, in 1966
with its Headquarters and Principal Laboratories at Mumbai and other Laboratories at Chennai,
Delhi, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.
The main objective of the Institute was to promote export market by way of innovative package
design and development as well as to upgrade the packaging standards at the National level.
Keeping in view of this objective, the Institute initiated its various activities such as Testing of
Packaging Materials and Packages, Training and Education, Research and Development and also
Consultancy Services related to packaging. The Institute has Testing Laboratory with
sophisticated testing equipment for the testing of packaging materials and packages and the
Testing Laboratory is accredited to the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration
Laboratories (NABL) as per ISO/IEC:17025 2015. The Institute is authorized by the Directorate
General of Shipping (DGS) and Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Government of
India for the testing of bulk packages for the carriage of hazardous goods for exports by Sea or
Air respectively.
In addition to the above, the Institute conducts regularly various Programmes in Packaging of
One Day, Two Days, One Week duration and also few National Seminars and Conferences of
specific topics of interest to the industry. The Institute also conducts Collaborative; InPlant/Company Oriented Programmes and In-Laboratory Hands-On Training for Testing and
