Does the essay start with an introductory paragraph?
Does the introductory paragraph have a clear opening sentence?
Does the introductory paragraph identify the texts (poems, story/stories,
drama) you will be discussing?
Does the introductory paragraph give the reader a clear idea as to what will
be discussed in the developing paragraphs?
The Developing Paragraphs:
Do the developing paragraphs have connectives that allow the essay to flow?
Do the developing paragraphs answer the questions?
Do the developing paragraphs give textual evidence to show that the writer is
knowledgeable of the details of the text?
Do the developing paragraphs discuss separate aspects of the question?
Are there sufficient details in the developing paragraphs?
Are there sufficient explanations in the developing paragraphs?
Does the writer’s vocabulary show a knowledge of the jargon of literature?
The Conclusion:
Is there a clear conclusion?
Does the conclusion summarize the essence of the entire essay?
