STATEMENT OF PURPOSE FOR A MASTERS
In today’s world, the most successful businesses are those that understand the importance of data
and the value it adds to the success of their business. Data science has become critical to any
business and proven to be extremely valuable even when executed at the SME level.
A report conducted by ISBI at Strathmore Business School has stated that SMEs in Kenya contribute
about 70% to the Kenyan GDP and taxes. Meaning that the closure of 2.2 million different SMEs
contributed to a decline in GDP, loss of tax revenue and consequently an increased
unemployment rate to an already disturbing rate in the country.
An article in 2019, on my country’s Registrar of Companies having listed a high rate of SMEs facing
closure leading to high youth unemployment rates, is a factor that triggered my interest in data
science and more specifically data analysis. Learning about why
With my interest in understanding business issues and addressing them through analytical
solutions, this confirmed that this was the direction I wanted to go, helping SMEs.
The documentary series, Blue Planet, is probably the factor that triggered my interest in biology
and more specifically biodiversity. I was amazed to discover and learn about new species and
this prompted my desire to expand my knowledge on the different animal species and their
characteristics. This passion is what drove me to excel in my science courses at both the CEGEP
and the undergraduate levels.
My experience as Vice-president of the X student association has certainly enhanced my ability
to communicate complex information to different clientele. Furthermore, to effectively manage
the responsibilities that came with this position as well as succeed at school, I had to develop
strong organizational and multi-tasking skills. I consider that the experience I gained and the
knowledge I learned through this experience will positively influence my ability to successfully
complete the practicum component of your Master’s in Business Management program.
