What does this table show? Benefits of tourism in receiving areas Social and cultural impacts (positive) Services: Healthcare, education, infrastructure and other facilities can see improvements due to economic development. Investment: This does not only positively impact the tourists, but the locals. They have better access to places and certain social venues like entertainment venues. Population structure: Younger people likely to stay as there are more jobs, rather than migrate elsewhere in search for work. A balanced population structure. Diverse cultures: Local traditions, customs are kept alive through traditional shows, embracing the culture. Also encourages mixing of different cultures & languages. This reduces tensions. Benefits of tourism in receiving areas Environmental (positive) Services: Income can be used to invest or protect the environment e.g. running national parks, paying for conservation projects. Disadvantages of tourism Using the photos and the graph, what are some of the disadvantages of tourism? Extension: Can you put them into economic, social and cultural and environmental impacts? Seasonal jobs: Many jobs are seasonal and poorly paid for locals. Overseas labour is also used to fill in the tertiary sector, locals therefore miss out. Many people may be out of work during the ‘low’ season and there is little career or skills progression for local people, meaning that they cannot earn higher wages and improve their quality of life. Reliant: tourist destinations can become overly reliant on the tourist industry. COVID has massively affected many countries who are reliant on tourism. Cambodia has over 2 million jobs in the tourist sector. Human rights: Many workers experience abuse by large tourist companies, in order to maximise profits. Long hours with little pay. Alcohol and drugs: Many tourist destinations are fuelled with party life. This increases the rate of crime in the area. Behaviour can be highly offensive by foreigners. Traditional values: Traditional values can be eroded as well as practices. This can create tensions between different cultures. Greenhouse gases: People coming from all over the world. Travelling via plane, car or train. Litter and pollution: Tourism can increase pollution and the amount of litter. Natural wildlife can be harmed. Noise, sight, water pollution. Natural habitats: Traditional values can be eroded as well as practices. This can create tensions between different cultures. Sightseeing boats and other pollution have massively damaged the great barrier reef. Deforestation: Land is sometimes cleared to make room for building. This reduces the amount of farmland available and increases deforestation. Describe and explain the positive and negative impacts of tourism in a receiving country? (7) – 10 minutes Peer assessment!
