A Director’s Guide to Playhouse Costumes Design The aesthetics of the costume design rests solely with the costumer and the director. The costume design is limited to what readily exists in the costume stock, with few exceptions. Special requests will be considered. The sooner we receive these requests, the more likely we are to be able to accommodate them. Character changes are often incredibly quick. Costume designers make every effort to minimize the number of garments that need to change. However, no wardrobe or hair/makeup support is provided during performances. The director should consider this when making choices about entrances, exits and scene changes. Measurements Measurements typically take place the first day of rehearsal. We can take measurements during a read through. Cast changes need to be communicated as soon as they are received. Fittings Fittings typically take place the Wednesday before the first performance. It should not be changed to accommodate the rehearsal schedule. Fittings occur in the costume shop. Tech and Performances Unless a main-stage production is using the dressing rooms, actors will dress in the dressing rooms. In the event that a main-stage production is using the dressing rooms, the cast will get dressed in the costume shop, using the rack rooms for dressing. The director should appoint someone to turn off the lights and lock the costume shop after each performance. No hair, makeup or wardrobe support is provided for playhouse performances.
