N°10- ESTRELA MOUNTAIN DOG
The origins of this breed date back nearly 2,000 years. It is a sheepdog that protects livestock from
predators. He is also protective, gentle and very attached to his family
HISTORY:
The mountain dog of the Serra da Estrela is one of the typical breeds of the Iberian Peninsula and the
few breeds from Portugal. Although it can make you think of the Spanish mastiff, it has its own
characteristics that make it unique.
As is the case for many molossoid breeds, it is not clear exactly when or how this breed of dog
appeared. It is assumed that, like other mountain dogs, he appeared at the same time as the first
peoples who settled in this region and, thanks to his working abilities, he remained there.
ORIGINS:
If this hypothesis is true, the origins of the mountain dog of Serra da Estrela were reminiscent of the
Visigothic people 2,000 years ago. Since then, he has been responsible for guiding and protecting the
cattle from wolves, thieves and other mountain threats.
As the name suggests, this dog is typical of Serra da Estrela, in central Portugal. When he was
recognized as a purebred dog during the first half of the 20th century, he also became a pet dog. It
has also met with some success in this respect, particularly in the United Kingdom.

PHYSICS:
The dog of Serra da Estrela is a large dog. It belongs to the group of molossoid dogs. This dog also
has a marked sexual dimorphism. Males and females measure more or less the same size, between 60
and 70 centimeters up to the withers. However, they have very different weights. Indeed, males are
more muscular and they can reach up to 60 kilos, while females weigh about 40 kilos.
Like many mountain dogs, the Serra da Estrela dog is a well proportioned, muscular, compact and
rustic animal. There are two varieties: one with short hair and one with long hair. In both cases, the
coat has the same colors: fawn or yellow on the body with a mask (the face and ears) of dark color.
This dog has a large head and his eyes give off a lot of kindness and intelligence. It also has
triangular ears that fall to the sides of the head. Its muzzle is straight and narrows slightly at the level
of the truffle. However, it is neither sharp nor narrow.
His legs are straight and strong, while his chest is not as deep as that of dogs of similar breeds. His
tail is straight and downward at rest. The dog can lift it up to his spine when he is on alert.
MOOD & TEMPERAMENT:
This breed of dog has a characteristic temperament of mountain dogs. These are dogs that protect
their territory, their family or their home against foreigners. They are therefore suspicious or cold
towards strangers, while they are of good nature, docile and affectionate with their owners.
They are intelligent and brave dogs. Therefore, their training is simple and gives results quickly,
provided it is respectful and based on positive reinforcement. They are always attentive to their guide
and it seems natural to obey them, as well as to make decisions and find occupations.
The mountain dog of Serra da Estrela was born to take care of the cattle of the mountains. It is
therefore an energetic dog who has great physical and mental abilities and needs to exercise. It is an
animal made to live in the mountains or in the countryside. If he does not spend enough or does not
practice enough mental stimulation exercises, he can become destructive or behave badly.
HEALTH & DIET:
Fortunately, this breed of dog does not suffer from genetic diseases. However, because of its size and
work, it is likely to be affected by other types of pathologies.
Large dogs are prone to joint and bone problems, such as dysplasia of the hip or elbow. They can
also suffer from a twist of the stomach. Only a veterinarian is then able to diagnose these diseases or
offer treatment to avoid them.
As the Serra da Estrela dog spends a lot of time in the wild, you must always de-worm it properly,
both internally and externally. We advise you to check your coat regularly because ticks and other
external parasites can cause serious diseases.
The mountain dog of the Serra da Estrela is a molossoid dog that, thanks to his good character, his
fidelity, but also his courage and his protective side, worked for centuries with cattle in Portugal. In
recent decades, he has also demonstrated that he is also an excellent pet dog.
