Greetings, fellow educator!
Thanks for including my graphic organizers in your classroom. I hope you will find them as useful as I do. Some might call what I do overkill but
making different versions of worksheets helps me attain my classroom goals. I rarely use worksheets from my textbooks or supplements from
retailers. This is done for several reasons. First, I believe the best educators gain a better mastery of their content by creating their own material. Secondly, what I do cuts down on cheating (or what students like to call “collaboration”). Lastly, graphic organizers effectively assist students in organizing their thoughts (a fact I am not even the close to being the first to discover and surely don’t need to tell you but which
bears mentioning nonetheless).
Continued on next page...
It all started with The Old Man and the Sea. I purchased a supplement student workbook for the novel and assigned it to my class as homework, instructing them to read the
book and do the workbook at home, and we did various other activities in class. Well, about 1/3 of my students actually read the book and then gave the answers to their
friends. Eventually, I deduced that with creative delegation among groups of friends, even less than 1/3 of the students actually read the whole book. This resulted in false
passing grades for the project; something which keeps me up late at night, being a teacher who wants to teach kids how to solve problems and maybe even inspire them to
enjoy reading. I had a “come to Jesus” meeting with all of my classes, the overall theme of which can be summed up in the words “Fool me once”.
So, I started taking extra time to make different versions along with sectioning off the different skills the students would practice while engaging each text. This had a remarkable effect. Students were able to move from skill to skill without getting confused. Using the same format of organizer for different texts introduced familiarity and
routine. Different versions of the front three work sections virtually eliminated cheating. Even though the “Extended Activities” sections are the same for the day’s work, by
the time the students got to that section they were already so deep into their work that “collaboration” didn’t cross their mind. Mission accomplished. No need for a “Fool
me twice” lecture.
Here’s a few guidelines and tips for using these:
The organizers and answer keys are broken down by level (1, 2, and 3) and by version (A-H). The text assigned is listed in the middle diamond. When correcting, the answer keys have the level in the top right and each of the four quadrants is a new version, the letter for which is by the middle diamond. One quadrant on each answer
key will contain the “Extended Activities” key, which pertains to all versions.
“Level 1” is for honors students. I offer extra credit for my non-honors students who are high level readers, so long as they complete the organizer. “Level 2” is for grade
level readers. “Level 3” is for special needs, differentiated, low level, and English-language-learners.
The study questions section shows they’ve actually read the text. When it comes to high level thinking, it’s actually the least important. However, reading the assigned
text is mandatory in my classroom.
Although there’s a few extra points of work here and there, I always make these worth 25 points; 5 for each front section and 10 for the back. That keeps grading and
percentages easier. For the honors version, the back section typically has 20 points of work so I make each problem worth 1/2 of a point.
“Meaningful sentence” for the vocabulary section means a sentence which shows they know the word and is connected to the student’s life. I remind them I know the
difference between a sentence they wrote and a sentence they got off Google. A Google sentence doesn’t earn them credit.
For the thinking section questions which deal with turning regular language into eloquent language, there are page references. Those page references are based on using the text of the story from the following link: http://www.eastoftheweb.com/short-stories/UBooks/AdveSpec.shtml Make sure if you use a different version you inform the students of the change in page references.
Although your classroom is your own kingdom to rule, I wouldn’t advise accepting incomplete organizers. Students often think that they can leave one or two sections
incomplete if they are under the gun or feeling lazy. It’s a chronic problem and I don’t think allowing it holds the students to a high standard.
Sherlock Holmes is intimidating literature due to the nature of the narration and dialogue. To ease them into it, I introduced this text to my students by first engaging
them in a deductions activity, playing a character for my students. I dressed in a slovenly manner, talked with a cockney accent, and had props laid on a table. Based on
what I said, how I was dressed, and what I had in my pockets, the students had to make deductions like Holmes would. It worked FABULOUSLY! Of course, feel free to
find your own way. Happy reading!

Plot Summary
Holmes wakens 9 with the promise of a new case. Helen Stoner, the new 31, was fearful as she told her
story to the men. She tells of her mother who married 15 when they were young. Their mother died several
years later, leaving her 40 to her husband but stipulating in her will that her twin daughters should receive a
portion of her money in the event of their 19.
Their father was a fierce man with few friends save some 25 he allowed to stay on his family’s land. 4 and
Helen’s bedrooms were on the 35 floor. They always locked their doors for fear of a 23 and cheetah; animals
the 33 had brought back from his travels in 11. Near the time of Julia’s marriage, she had been hearing a 29 in
the middle of the night. Helen was awoke one night by her sister 18 and heard the sound of a whistle and a 1
sound. Her sister’s last words were “The 7!” The 32 didn’t see marks of 12 or poison on Julia so Helen believe
she died of 13 and 21 shock.
Helen is about to get married and had been 17 in her sister’s room due to 36 in the house and heard the
whistle the night before she came to see Holmes. Having followed Helen, Dr. Roylott then comes and 37
Holmes in his room, bending the 34 fire 6 in the process. Holmes and Watson travel to 10 to see the house
themselves. Upon arriving at the grounds of 8, they have a chance 22 with the baboon. Holmes first inspects
Julia’s room, the 2 and shutters, and discovers that the bed is 27 to the floor, the 5 doesn’t connect to the outside, and the 14 is a “dummy”. Upon inquiring about the bell-rope, Helen states that she and her sister never
bothered the 39 and would always got things for themselves. He then inspects the Dr. Roylott’s room and finds
a small dog leash, iron safe, and 16 of milk. He then asks Mrs. Stoner if her father keeps a 20, to which she answers no.
Holmes and Watson then make the plans of renting a room at a nearby 24 from where they can see the
mansion, instructing Helen to leave a 3 in her window when her stepfather goes to bed, along with staying in
her bedroom despite the renovations happening at the time. When she lights the lantern around 26, they travel to her bedroom and wait in utter darkness without making a 38 until about 28. At that time they hear the
ventilator open and Holmes 41 furiously at the bell-rope with the 46 he had brought while excitedly asking
Watson if he can “see it!” Moments later, a horrible scream comes from the doctor’s room. Holmes and Watson go to his room and see the “Speckled Band”, a 44, wrapped around the doctor’s 45. Holmes puts the snake
in the safe and informs Watson he deduced a snake from the evidence of a whistle, saucer of milk, dog leash,
iron safe, and the fact that the doctor had access to Indian artifacts and animals. In the final moments of the
story, Holmes explains he aroused the snake’s 47 by lashing at it and was consequently somewhat responsible
for the doctor’s death, something which wouldn’t weigh heavily on his 43.
