Helen Stoner asks Holmes for help.
Helen tells Holmes about Julia’s death. She died 2 years ago and 2 weeks before her wedding. Before she died, she asked Helen about a low whistle sound. Julia’s last words: “It was the band, the speckled band.” Recently, Helen is sleeping in Julia’s room due to the construcDon and she hears the same whistle sound again.
She fears for her life since she is also about to be married.

Climax

Home learns that there is a venDlator connecDng between the two rooms and a dummy rope hanging down to Julia’s bed. Julia’s bed is clamped to the floor; it can never be moved and it must remain in the same posiDon to the rope!
Dr. RoyloL comes to visit Holmes. He angrily demands to know what Helen has said to him. (He must be guity to be this angry!)
He aLempts to inDmidate Holmes by bending an iron fireplace poker. Saturday, February 21, 15
FALLING ACTION
Holmes and Watson sneak onto the estate and wait in silence in the dark. Hours later, they see light through the venDlator and then hear another sound like a jet of steam from a keLle.
Holmes strikes a match and starts beaDng at the bell-­‐pull with his cane.

Resolution
Holmes and Watson hear a terrible yell.
They enter Dr. Roylott’s room and find him dead with a
snake, an Indian swamp adder, wrapped around his
forehead.
The coronor (officer) decides that Dr. Roylott’s death is the
result of an accident while playing with a dangerous pet.
