Life was close to perfect… until it was time for Nugget to go to school. [Principal enters, Fang and Nugget swim toward Principal.] Principal Welcome to Mini Minnow School, Nugget! [Nugget exits stage smiling. Principal blocks Fang and holds up sign in Fang’s face.] Move along, buster: minnows only! [Fang walks away, dejected.] 1 Narrator On Monday, Nugget was busy with reading class… [enter reading teacher and Classmates] Reading Teacher [reading from storybook] Boys and girls, today’s story is about three little minnows and a big, bad shark… Nugget A big, bad SHARK?? Ha! Impossible. [enter math teacher and classmates. Classmates sit in rows. Scenery crew holds math chalkboard] Narrator On Tuesday, Nugget was busy with math class… Math Teacher [walking up and down the rows of Classmates] 5-1=? and 8-2=?. Very good! Now, who can answer this: If there were ten minnows swimming around the playground and a shark suddenly came along and ate four of them, how many minnows would be left? Nugget [raising hand] Is this a trick question? A shark would NEVER do that! [enter science teacher. Classmates sit in pairs. Scenery crew holds science chalkboard.] Narrator On Wednesday, Nugget was busy with science class… Science Teacher Today we will continue learning about the food chain. All life in the ocean need phytoplankton to survive. Phytoplankton get their energy directly from the sun, just like plants. Zooplankton feed on phytoplankton, and also make delicious dinners for us minnows. And boys and girls, do you know what eat minnows? SHARKS! Classmates [scream] Nugget What? That can’t be true! My best friend is a shark! Classmate 1 & 2 Have you lost your gills? Classmate 3 Hellooo – sharks EAT minnows! Classmate 4 You’ve gone bonkers, Nugget. Classmate 5 Sharks and minnows can’t be friends! Narrator Nugget was shocked. (And apparently, delicious.) 2 [enter Fang and Nugget] Fang That afternoon, Nugget explained it all to Fang. Hi Nugget! How’ve you been? I haven’t seen you for days! How’s minnow school? Nugget [looking afraid of Fang] Hi Fang. Yeah, it’s going okay. But I’ve learned a thing or two at school. For one, Sharks are toothy. And secondly, sharks are scary. And thirdly, it’s just not possible for sharks and minnows to be friends. Fang [very surprised] Humph. That sounds fishy to me, Nugget. Nugget It’s true – see? [scenery crew brings in Food Chain Test board. Nugget looks sad and scared of Fang.] I...I…I’m sorry Fang, I gotta go. [Nugget runs off stage.] Fang [looking deflated.] Oh man, how could this happen? Nugget’s my best friend! I suppose I am toothy, [wiggle teeth] but there’s nothing I can do about that. But scary? No way! I’ve got to prove that I’m the friendliest buddy a minnow can have. [Fang exits stage and changes costume] Narrator The next day, the Mini Minnow School had a surprise visitor – a very big surprise visitor! [Nugget and Classmates are sitting in classroom reading books. Reading Teacher is holding phone to her ear.] Reading Teacher Okay, Principal, thank you for letting me know. [Hnags up and turns to students.] Class, it looks like a special guest is visiting our classroom today. Please sit up straight and use your best manners. [Fang enters wearing mermaid/over-the-top costume.] Fang [in a sugar-sweet voice] Hello boys and girls! [Fang grins big.] All except Nugget [screaming] SHARK! Swim for your lives! [exit stage] Nugget [stares at Fang, then audience and slaps forehead] Oh my algae! It’s Fang! [exit stage] Narrator Later that day… 3 [Nugget and Friends are playing hide and seek among the seaweed. Scenery crew waves seaweed] Special Delivery 1 [carrying vase of flowers] Special delivery for Nugget the Minnow! Nugget Oh wow! Thank you! Friends [scrambling to see the note tucked in flowers] Who are those from, Nugget? Nugget It says, “Dear Nugget, I’d love to have you over for dinner.” Friend 1 Yeah right! Friend 2 He wants Friend 3 & 4 TO EAT YOU Friend 5 for dinner! [Friends scream and exit stage.] Nugget [slapping forehead] Holy mackerel! Narrator Fang tried everything he could think of: A tattoo [Fang enters with tattoo on his dorsal fin, raising his eyebrows at Nugget while Nugget is playing.] A message in the sky Scenery Crew [one motors past as a boat, other crew member holds sign “Nugget is the best friend ever!” Nugget walks past and rolls his eyes.] Narrator A song and dance routine. [Band Members perform air jam and sing song about friendship (title?) with Fang. Nugget swims past with backpack and swims faster, embarrassed, once he sees Fang.] Narrator But nothing worked. By Friday, Fang was out of ideas. All alone, he swam over. 4 Scenery Crew [holds seaweed for a sad Fang to slowly swim over, under and around.] Narrator He swam under. He swam all around. Life was not even close to perfect. Narrator Then Fang had a very good idea. He used his toothy grin… Fang [touching his pointy teeth] I’m coming Nugget! [Swims to net and chews with giant tooth prop?] Narrator Minnows School. …and chewed right through the net, releasing all the fish from Mini [Fishmen take net away, exit stage] Fish [stare at Fang, not sure what to do] Fang away.] I know, I know. I’m toothy. I’m scary. I’m… too sharky. [Fang swims 5 Nugget [swimming to Fang] Wait a minute! There were eleven minnows and a very special shark came along. How many friends are there altogether?” Narrator There was only one answer: Fang [surprised and smiling] Twelve friends! Narrator In the deep, deep ocean lived twelve friends. They swam over. They swam under. They swam all around. And everyone was all smiles. Especially you-know-who. [Fang smiles with giant tooth prop.] 6
