Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Course Title – Management Information Systems MIS Course Faculty/Department IT&A Area members 1 Course Description: Management Information System (MIS), a part of overall information system of an organization, serves as a nerve centre of an organization, endowing it with the capabilities of decision making, planning, monitoring and control of business activities. MIS and other forms of information systems such as Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems and Knowledge Management Systems etc., are important technology-led resources to facilitate strategic planning, management control and operational control in organizations. It is therefore important to obtain an overview of the approaches to designing, planning and implementing various types of information systems in business organizations, and to understand how IT can be successfully deployed in information systems planning in context of both India and World business scenario. Learning Objectives: This course aims to develop students with the following specific learning objectives a) Familiarize the students with the concepts and practical applications of various types of information systems prevalent in the business organizations. b) Illustrate how management information systems have been helpful in enhancing business compliance and facilitate e-governance in the country. c) Demonstrate the use and examine the role of information technology in integrating business processes in a changing business environment. (3.2)* d) Guide and demonstrate to students the components of and approaches required for planning and implementation of knowledge based information systems with both local and global orientation. Pedagogy: a) Class discussions to understand the real life implementations of the concepts learnt as pre-reads. Since much of the course material requires class discussion, it is important that participants are prepared for the class to present and defend their ideas. Preparation for class includes having read the assigned material. 2 b) Cases are a great educational experience but they absolutely require readiness for the class. When cases are assigned, every participant should come to class ready to discuss the issues of the case. c) Group work aimed at developing understanding of application of management information systems in various contexts. The class will be divided into a number of groups. It is mandatory to discuss the case in groups and while participating in discussion, exhibit high degree of people skills in managing the participation. The groups are expected to approach the issue based on the concepts, examples and techniques discussed in the class and submit their report. Each group will be required to give a presentation. Evaluation for this assignment will be done based on individual as well as group performance Course Requirements: There is no critical prior course requirement for this course. Each group will address issues and challenges related to innovations in the network economy as evidenced in the Indian or International context.
