Course Description:
Management Information System (MIS), a part of overall information system of an
organization, serves as a nerve centre of an organization, endowing it with the capabilities of
decision making, planning, monitoring and control of business activities. MIS and other forms
of information systems such as Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems and Knowledge
Management Systems etc., are important technology-led resources to facilitate strategic
planning, management control and operational control in organizations. It is therefore
important to obtain an overview of the approaches to designing, planning and implementing
various types of information systems in business organizations, and to understand how IT can
be successfully deployed in information systems planning in context of both India and World
business scenario.
Learning Objectives:
This course aims to develop students with the following specific learning objectives a) Familiarize the students with the concepts and practical applications of various types of
information systems prevalent in the business organizations.
b) Illustrate how management information systems have been helpful in enhancing
business compliance and facilitate e-governance in the country.
c) Demonstrate the use and examine the role of information technology in integrating
business processes in a changing business environment. (3.2)*
d) Guide and demonstrate to students the components of and approaches required for
planning and implementation of knowledge based information systems with both local
and global orientation.
Pedagogy:
a) Class discussions to understand the real life implementations of the concepts learnt as
pre-reads. Since much of the course material requires class discussion, it is important
that participants are prepared for the class to present and defend their ideas. Preparation
for class includes having read the assigned material.
2
b) Cases are a great educational experience but they absolutely require readiness for the
class. When cases are assigned, every participant should come to class ready to discuss
the issues of the case.
c) Group work aimed at developing understanding of application of management
information systems in various contexts. The class will be divided into a number of
groups. It is mandatory to discuss the case in groups and while participating in
discussion, exhibit high degree of people skills in managing the participation. The
groups are expected to approach the issue based on the concepts, examples and
techniques discussed in the class and submit their report. Each group will be required
to give a presentation. Evaluation for this assignment will be done based on individual
as well as group performance
