Cell Analogies Collage

Cell Analogies Collage
Background Information - as of now, you know that the cell is a “little machine of sorts” with
parts (organelles) that are designed to perform specific functions, much like that of an
automobile. Take the engine out of a car, and it will not work properly, much like that of the
nucleus of the cell. This is an analogy (comparison) using the structure (part/organelle) and
relating it to its function (what it does).
Overview - Create a cell collage either electronically, or on construction paper demonstrating
that you CAN relate the structure of a cell to its function and relate that to a real-world idea
such as this example:
The nucleus - responsible for controlling all of the basic functions of the cell
The nucleus is LIKE the human brain because it controls much of the functions of the human
body.
Directions - Paper Version:
LABEL YOUR POSTER “CELL ANALOGY COLLAGE”
1.
2.
3.
4.
Color the animal cell and the organelles that have been given to you.
Cut and paste them into the cell (they WILL fit).
Cut out/paste the entire cell into the center of construction paper.
Create labels/name the different parts (outside the cell) and draw arrows to point to the
part inside the cell.
5. After you’ve labeled the organelles, ALSO write their functions (ex. Nucleus- part that is
responsible for controlling the cell
6. Using a magazine, cut out a picture of an object that has a similar function (use) as each
cell organelle. Write an analogy/comparison using LIKE that relates your picture to the
function of the organelle. FOR EXAMPLE: The nucleus is LIKE the human BRAIN because
it is the control center for the human body.
7. Draw a line from the definition label to the similar function picture.
Complete for the following organelles: nucleus, endoplasmic reticulum,
ribosomes, mitochondria, golgi body, lysosome, cytoplasm, vacuole, cell
membrane
Electronic version1. Using kidspiration, inspiration, Word, Paint, etc. create the same cell collage as above.
You WILL need to find a picture of a cell and all the parts named above. Using a
computer program, draw arrows to the labels for the name, function/definition for each
of the parts. Find a picture (online) that relates to the cell organelle and copy/paste it
onto the outside of your cell. Draw another arrow to the analogy/comparison (same as
the paper version only you are doing it electronically).
2. When you are finished, you can PRINT OUT, OR save on a portable drive, OR email it!
