PLANT
Piling rigs will have safety cages fitted and where they require adjustment to allow piles to be installed
adjacent to underpins, additional barriers will be positioned 2m away from the rig to prevent persons
coming into contact with the mechanism or auger and the RPM will be reduced to reduce the risk of injury
in the unlikely event of contact with the rig.
Moving Augers
When moving augers, the following procedure shall be observed:
 Where possible, Augers to be moved singularly in the bucket of an excavator, held securely
against the blade.
 Where chains are to be used, attached by a competent person, with a maximum load of 2no.
augers and under no circumstances should the augers themselves be touched. Any positioning
required shall be done by holding/ pushing the chains only.
 Although there are multiple trained banksman on site, only one shall be nominated at any one
time by wearing an orange hi-viz vest as opposed to a standard yellow to ensure all person, in
particular machine drivers, know who is responsible for instructing them. Where the nominated
banksman needs to complete a different operation, he shall hand over the orange vest to
another trained banksman who will assume his duties.
EXCAVATIONS
Edges of light wells will be protected with scaffold and will have combi-safe barriers fixed to them at all
times.
Suitable, securely tied ladder access will be maintained at all times in excavations.
Spoil being excavated below the LGF and Basement slabs shall be battered back to eliminate the risk of
collapse.
Once top-down construction begins, a rescue tripod, harness and stretcher will be made available in the
event that an operative requires rescuing.
ENVIRONMENT:
Oil storage for tanks and drums containing greater than 200ltrs will be contained in a secondary
containment system, it must have a capacity of not less than 110% of the largest container's storage
capacity or, if there is more than one container within the system, of not less than 110% of the largest
container's storage capacity or 25% of their aggregate storage capacity, whichever is the greater.
Oil storage will not be within 10m of a drain or watercourse and will be located away from regular vehicle
movements to prevent damage and a double bunded fuel bowser will be used on site and will be locked
when not in use. Drip trays will be used when refuelling plant, under oil containers when in use and under
static plant. Spill kits will be provided next to all fuel storage.
When dewatering, water will be pumped into a catch-pit with an overflow at high level, allowing clean
water to be released into an agreed area. All sediment will settle in the bottom of the catch-pit which will
be jet washed clean periodically and any sediment will be disposed of as general waste or used as backfill material where possible.
SITE TRAFFIC:
As per the Synergy Traffic Management Plan.
Deliveries to site will approach from the West to avoid the A4/ A308 junction and South Kensington
Station.
Vehicles shall approach the sier via the Redcliffe Gardens North/. South link and turn left onto the A308
Fulham Road. From there vehicles shall proceed straight on Fulham Road and turn right into Park Walk,
and then immediately left into Elm Park Road.
On exiting the site, vehicles shall turn left in line with the current one way system onto Elm Park Road, left

WASTE:
During piling operations, muck away vehicles shall reverse onto the site on the existing ground. Once the
piling is complete, the new GF shall be cast allowing vehicles to reverse onto it and be loaded directly by
13T excavator.
Spoil will be removed by 13T machine reaching into the “Moling Hole” with a 2 ½T machine digging
beneath the new GF slab. No spoil will be stockpiled on site as the 13T excavator shall load directly into
the muck-away wagon.
When excavating the sub-basement, the 2 ½T machine will dig itself down again with spoil being removed
by 13T crane with grab attachment reaching down through the “Moling Hole” from above ground.
Trenchco hold a valid Hazardous Waste Carriers License and an appropriate Waste Transfer Note will be
completed for all waste removed from site and will be signed for by Site Supervisor before Lorry leaves
site.
DUST:
All activities will assessed for the risks associated with dust production and where necessary, water will be
used to suppress the dust by means of wet cutting and damping down with a hosepipe direct to the
source.
CONCRETE PIPE
CLEANING:
Blockages are cleared with the use of cleaning balls forced through the pipe system, propelled with
compressed air.
During this operation, the area will be cleared of all non-operational personnel.

METHODOLOGY:
PILING:
The secant pile methodology comprises the formation of overlapping concrete piles. Typically alternate
unreinforced or “female” piles are formed using lower strength concrete. The remaining piles are standard
reinforced concrete “male” piles. The picture below shows a typical construction sequence:
The piling working platform will be prepared where required by levelling the existing ground using a 2 ½T machine.
Piling will commence in accordance with the Engineer’s specification and drawings.
Piling rigs will be delivered to site with any protection to pavements as specified in the Traffic Management Plan.
All plant will be delivered with a valid Thorough Examination Certificate and a competent operator, holding a
CPCS qualification or similar.
Prior to starting, the piling platform level will be checked to ensure that is consistent with the pile design. If there is
a significant difference, the engineer shall be informed and the piling design amended before commencement.
The rig will be erected in accordance with the manufacturers details on the piling platform and then levelled in
position directly over the pile to be constructed where it will commence installation in sequence, with the rig
traversing along the line of the piles.
Prior to commencement of the operation, and auger “end cap” is fitted at the base of the auger to seal the hollow
stem against the ingress of ground water and soil as the continuous flight auger bores into the ground to the
required depth. Little spoil is removed during the boring phase.
Bore spoil arisings and concrete over break is removed from the pile head by the attendant 360⁰ excavator.
Once the auger has bored down leaving only approx 150mm above ground, the rig will be disconnected, an
additional auger fitted and boring will continue. This process will be repeated until the final depth of the piles has
been reached.
In the event of a blockage, the auger is extracted by rotating anti-clockwise to leave as much spoil supporting the
hole as possible.
Blockages are cleared with the use of cleaning balls forced through the pipe system, propelled with compressed
air. During this operation, the area will be cleared of all non-operational personnel and the pipes restrained
mechanically with pressure released prior to clip loosening. In all instances, once the blockage is cleared, the hole
is re-drilled to a founding level slightly deeper than originally achieved.
Bore spoil arisings and concrete over break is removed from the pile head by the attendant 360⁰ excavator.
The prefabricated reinforcing cages, with proprietary wheel clip on plastic spacers, is then installed into the bore
hole. The cages will be lifted using the auxiliary line on the piling rig, as well as the attendant 360⁰ excavator, to
prevent damage to the cage and to prevent spoil falling into the bore hole.
The cages will be lowered into the bore hole with the Supervisor satisfying himself that the cage is lined up
correctly before being detached from the attendant 360⁰ excavator. The cage will then be left attached to the
auxiliary line of the rig and lowered under its own weight but may be assisted by the attendant 360⁰ excavator
where additional pressure is required to force the cage into the pile.
Concrete will be pumped directly into the bore holes until they are full.
Any rebar protruding above ground level will be protected with “mushrooms” to prevent injury.

CAPPING BEAMS & SLABS:
Once the above stages have been completed, the capping beam and ground floor slab will be constructed.
Excavate to both sides of secant piles. Break down piles using attachment to 360⁰ Excavator where possible or
with pneumatic tools to engineer’s levels.
Once the formation is reached the Engineer will inspect & check the oversite is @ correct line and level.
Blind & lay polythene to bottom of trench and GF slab.
Where appropriate and shutter edges, then steelfixers will then install mesh reinforcement as per the engineers’
details.
4” pipes will be installed in the capping beam at 1m centres, directly above the centre line of the basement lining
walls, allowing concrete to be poured from above ground level.
Concrete will be pumped directly into the required areas direct from lorry.
Poker beam and tamp to finish levels. Once hardened sufficiently remove shuttering.
Note: When using vibrating equipment such as petrol saw, vibrating tamps & pokers check for usage times and
rotate workforce to prevent over exposure, record daily exposure to each individual
REDUCE LEVEL DIG:
Excavation will continue with the 13T Excavator reaching into the “Moling Hole” and being fed by the smaller 2 ½T
machine which will excavate areas that the larger machine cannot reach and will place spoil into the area for the
larger machine to load lorries.
Access into the excavation will be via a suitably tied ladder.
BASEMENT SLAB:
Once the formation is reached the Engineer will inspect & check the oversite is @ correct line and level.
Blind & lay polythene to bottom of excavation.
Where appropriate shutter edges, then steelfixers will then install mesh reinforcement as per the engineers’
details.
Concrete will be pumped directly into the required areas direct from lorry through 4” pipes in the capping beam.
Poker slab and tamp to finish levels. Once hardened sufficiently remove shuttering.
Note: When using vibrating equipment such as petrol saw, vibrating tamps & pokers check for usage times and
rotate workforce to prevent over exposure, record daily exposure to each individual

LINING WALLS:
Lining walls will have shuttering erected in timber in 5 linear metre sections with propping as detailed below
(typical detail only).
Mobile tower scaffolds erected by a PASMA trained operative will be used for access during erection of shutters
and for pouring the walls.
Concrete will be pumped directly into the shuttering.
Poker concrete and tamp to finish levels.
Shutters to be struck once concrete has cured.
Mobile tower scaffolds erected by a PASMA trained operative will be used to access the LGF slab soffit and
straighten the starter bars.
Columns will have shuttering erected to the soffit level.
During the LGF slab construction 4” plastic pipes will have been installed above the centre of the columns,
allowing concrete to be poured from above ground, rather than trailing pump pipework into basement.
Poker concrete to finish levels.
Shutters to be struck once concrete has cured.
SUB-BASEMENT SLAB:
Once the formation is reached the Engineer will inspect & check the oversite is @ correct line and level.
Install below ground drainage.
Note: When using vibrating equipment such as petrol saw, vibrating tamps & pokers check for usage times and
rotate workforce to prevent over exposure, record daily exposure to each individual.
Lining walls for the sub-basement will be constructed as per the basement level.

TEMPORARY PILE REMOVAL:
A “safe zone” will be demarcated around the temporary pile excluding all persons not completing removal of the
piles.
Access to the top of the pile will be completed from a mobile tower scaffold, erected by a PASMA trained
operative.
The top of the pile will be cut around the perimeter with a petrol cut-off saw, as close to the soffit of the GF slab as
possible.
An electric breaker or pneumatic breaker will be used to break out the top (approx 300mm) of the pile.
Once the rebar has been exposed at the top of the pile, the remainder of the concrete will be broken down using a
2½ T excavator with a pecker attachment.
The machine driver shall wear eye protection and ear defenders at all times when breaking the pile.
As concrete is broken down and rebar is exposed, an operative shall cut the rebar using a petrol cut-off saw, using
a mobile scaffold tower for access.
The pile will be broken down in approx 1m sections.
USE OF EXCAVATORS AS LIFTING EQUIPMENT:
Under no circumstances will excavators be used for lifting persons as they operate at speeds which make them
totally unsuitable for the lifting of persons.
Excavators designed for lifting loads/ object handling should have a rated object handling capacity table inside the
cab. If a rated object handling table is not present then the machine should not be used for object handling.
The use of an excavator as lifting equipment poses additional hazards as the slinger needs to be in the “danger
area” adjacent to the arm/ bucket etc. during the lift to attach and monitor the load during the lift. As such, clear
lines of communication must be kept between the operator and the slinger at all times.
All excavators and their lifting accessories will be suitable maintained, have a Thorough Examination completed
and a certificate issued a minimum of every twelve months.
Prior to any lifting operations with excavators, the appointed person will ensure that a risk assessment is
completed, ensuring that the machine is capable of lifting the intended load, that lifting accessories are adequate
and free from damage and that ground conditions are suitable to allow the lift to take place.
The appointed person will brief all persons present/ involved in the lift on any significant findings of the risk
assessment, the method statement and operatives individual roles in carrying out the task.
Where special lifting attachments are used, they must be compatible with the machine and its coupling methods to
which they are being attached.
The excavator operator must always make use of the safety lever/ armrest whenever the slinger is in the danger
area to avoid moving the controls by mistake.
The hazards associated with travelling with a suspended load, particularly the presence of personnel adjacent to
the machines direction of travel, must be considered, assessed and recorded on the lifting plan.
All persons involved will wear hard hats, protective footwear and high-visibility clothing as a minimum.
Lifts will not take place where there are persons working underneath the load, for example in a trench, and the
excavator operator will not move the machine until he has satisfied himself that all persons, including the slinger/
signaller, have moved themselves to a position of safety.
When attaching slings to the hooking device or lifting point, care must be taken to ensure that the slings and their
attachments are able to hang free at all times, particularly when using a “D-Shackle” as it may limit rotation.
