METALLICA 1981
• Metallica was the creator
of the “Metal” genre.
(along with SLAYER,
Anthrax, and Megadeth) in
1981.
• Metallica and another
band named Slayer, can be
considered the 2 most
popular metal bands in the
‘80s. They can be
considered rivals.
SLAYER 1983
The start of it all
• Metallica started when one the
guitarists/lead singer posted an
“Band wanted” add in a local
newspaper. His name was James
Hetfield. The first person the
respond to add was the
drummer, Lars Ulrich. They met
together and recorded a song.
That song was named “Hit the
Lights”. One day, they were
offered to put that song in on a
record called “Metal
Massacure” with many different
artists on it. They agreed.
• Slayer’s “Aggressive Perfector”
was also on that album.
That started both of the band’s
career.
Kill ‘em all

first album “Kill ‘em All” in

as one of their most famous
songs.

• Metallica was going to a
city in Europe for a tour.
Out of nowhere, the bus
skidded out of control.
The bassist Cliff Burton
flew out the bus window.
Then the bus tipped over
and landed on the bassist.
Cliff Burton was dead.
• 1962 - 1986
Jason Newsted
• Jason Newsted Joined the band at
the end of 1986. He replaced Cliff
Burton as bassist. He had no respect
from the other band members,
which would eventually cause him to
leave the band in 2000.
…And Justice For All
• Metallica put out their third
album “…And Justice For All” in

New Metallica
• Metallica lost almost HALF of their
fans during the ‘New Metallica’
era. ‘Old Metallica’ was fast,
energetic, and METAL. ‘New
Metallica’ is slow, on the bluesy
side, and non-energetic. Fans
hated that. Look at the top
picture, The person on the very
right (Jason Newsted) was
replaced by the guy on the
middle/left of the bottom picture.
Other than that, Metallica still has
the same band members.
