(along with SLAYER, Anthrax, and Megadeth) in 1981. • Metallica and another band named Slayer, can be considered the 2 most popular metal bands in the ‘80s. They can be considered rivals. SLAYER 1983 The start of it all • Metallica started when one the guitarists/lead singer posted an “Band wanted” add in a local newspaper. His name was James Hetfield. The first person the respond to add was the drummer, Lars Ulrich. They met together and recorded a song. That song was named “Hit the Lights”. One day, they were offered to put that song in on a record called “Metal Massacure” with many different artists on it. They agreed. • Slayer’s “Aggressive Perfector” was also on that album. That started both of the band’s career. Kill ‘em all • Metallica released their first album “Kill ‘em All” in 1982. “Hit the Lights” was the opening track on that album. The track listing: 1. Metal Militia Ride the Lightning • Metallica put out their second album called “Ride the Lightning” in 1984. It featured their first “ballad” type song called “Fade to Black” The track listing: 1. The Call of Ktulu Master of Puppets • Metallica put our their third album “Master of Puppets” in 1986. The song “Master of Puppets” is still known today as one of their most famous songs. Tragedy • Metallica was going to a city in Europe for a tour. Out of nowhere, the bus skidded out of control. The bassist Cliff Burton flew out the bus window. Then the bus tipped over and landed on the bassist. Cliff Burton was dead. • 1962 - 1986 Jason Newsted • Jason Newsted Joined the band at the end of 1986. He replaced Cliff Burton as bassist. He had no respect from the other band members, which would eventually cause him to leave the band in 2000. …And Justice For All • Metallica put out their third album “…And Justice For All” in 1988. It was the first album with the new bassist. Metallica turned the bass volume down on the album as part of the “Hazing” on Newsted. Track Listing: 1. Blackened 2. …And Justice For All 3. Dyers Eve Metallica • Metallica put out their self-titled album “Metallica” in 1990. It is arguably their most famous album of all time. The song structure on this album is more “simple” according to Metallica. The album cover is also simple. It shows a faded Metallica logo and a snake. Track listing: 1. Enter Sandman 2. My Friend of Misery 12. The Struggle Within Load • After the release of “Metallica”, fans were expecting a ‘Metallica 2’. Instead, Metallica put out and album called “Load” in 1995. The Outlaw Torn New Metallica • Metallica lost almost HALF of their fans during the ‘New Metallica’ era. ‘Old Metallica’ was fast, energetic, and METAL. ‘New Metallica’ is slow, on the bluesy side, and non-energetic. Fans hated that. Look at the top picture, The person on the very right (Jason Newsted) was replaced by the guy on the middle/left of the bottom picture. That was their WORST album of all time. The ‘Snare’ drum was tuned in a different way. It was also the album that Newsted (bassist) quit and Rob Trujio replaced him. Track listing: 1. Frantic 2.
