1. SOCIAL MEDIA TAX
• The introduction of the
#SocialMediaTax led to a decline
in the internet penetration rate
from 47.4% to 35% in only 3
months thereby disconnecting 5
million internet users.
• The Tax undermines internet
access & affordability whereas
threatening freedom of
expression.
2. REGISTRATION OF ONLINE CONTENT CREATORS
• The government is expanding its
enforcement of the regulation,
levying the fee of $20 on news
organizations and social media
influencers.
• This regulation discourages
online activity, stifles free
expression, and creates new
opportunities for gov’t
interference in citizens’
speech.
3. PROSECUTION OF INTERNET USERS
• The continuous detention of
internet users and activists by
the government instils fear
into other citizens leading to
self-censorship.
4. SURVEILLANCE
• Mass surveillance erodes
intellectual freedom and
damages the social fabric of
affected societies; it also
opens the door to flawed
and illegal profiling of
individuals.
