Can Robots Create Art? by Sean and Troy, 5A What is an ArtBot? An ArtBot is a robot that can draw. It’s a device with markers for legs, that moves in strange ways and wobbles across a piece of paper, creating drawings as it moves. (Some people call it ScribbleBot or Scribble Machine.) How can it move? The ArtBot uses a small motor to move. In order to power the motor, we used batteries. When connected to the battery, the motor’s shaft spins. We have added a rotor to the motor shaft, and this makes the robot vibrate and move. How can you change the ways the robot draws? By changing the robot’s design we could change how the robot draws. Things that one can change to make the ArtBot draw in different ways: Strength of motor Rotor length, for example one or two popsicles sticks; if they are positioned straight or crossed Rotor balance: popsicle sticks placed off-center or centered Weight; one can for example add details to the rotor, or the body of the bot Number of markers and how they are positioned All of these things, and if changing them, affect the speed, smoothness and direction of the bot. Conclusion: Yes, robots can create art and we can change how they do it!
