Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Effects of Failure In terms of Academic Aspect to the Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences
Students of College of Subic Montessori, Inc. Dinalupihan, Bataan
Introduction
Being a grade 12 graduating student can be inherently stressful due to the load of
requirements they face in the whole academic year. Some have goals they are trying to achieve
by the end of school year; some are just plain studying to pass their subjects. Grades are
important measures in society, significantly impacting the lives of students since this is where
the knowledge and intellectual capacity of a student are being listed and graded; therefore,
students are under pressure and are extremely concerned about the grades they receive. So
sometimes, out of pressure and stress they feel, they fail achieving passing scores or have low
grades.
Everybody have different coping mechanisms on how they face failure. According to the
Theory of Academic Failure by Hon. Magi Solomon, Academic failure means academic
performance that lacks success. It involves lacks of success in carrying out educational tasks. It
also involves lack of success after the programme of the studies and activities are being offered.
According to Ajjawi (et al. 2019), a significant proportion of graduating students do
persist and complete their studies despite multiple failed units and a negative emotional burden.
The small portion, however, resulted in being dropped-out. Students would also find and
discover different ways of coping and surviving stress caused by failure such as finding calmness
in inner self. They are more likely able to do these if their teachers or instructors would guide
them and help them (Hjeltnes et al 2015). However, a student who is realistic and a logical
thinker tend to avoid these failures (Lu, 2019). Additionally, the students’ attitude towards the
subjects is dependent on the ability of the teacher. If the teacher is good, then the students will be
responsible enough (Palomares, 2016)
Many studies have looked about academic failure. Researchers have studied the different
factors that cause it, the relationship of failed grades to the increase of drop-out, and the impact
of it to their mental health. However, there has not been a lot of attention given to the effects of
the failure to the students, and specifically on how the students treat that in their own ways,
either positively or negatively. Though there are still a number of students who are failing their
grades, the Department of Education made the DepEd order no. 13, s. 2018 which gives a student
a chance to fulfil his/her learning gaps or failure wherein the student is required to attend
remedial or summer classes. So, from this, the student can make-up to his/her deficiencies and
somehow recover from being failed.
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of failure in terms of academic aspect to
the grade 12 humanities and social sciences students of College of Subic Montessori,
Dinalupihan Campus. It mainly focuses to how they cope up in the failure they experience, or
experiencing. On how they really see it, whether as an inspiration to get-up and try again or just
totally give up.
Statement of the Problem
This problem seeks to identify the Effects of Failure in Terms of Academic Aspect to the
Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students of CSM-DC S.Y. 2019-2020
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. How may the profile of the Grade 12 HUMSS students be described in terms of:
a. Sex;
b. Section; and
c. Academic awards
2. What are the effects of failure in terms of academic aspect among grade 12 HUMSS
students?
3. What implication could be proposed?
4. Is there any significant effect to the students whenever they fail academically?
