Sound Vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard is known as Sound. When we hit the drum, membrane of the drum vibrates producing sound. When we play a guitar, the string on it makes to and fro motion and produces sound. Sound is produced by vibrating prong of tuning fork. FREQUENCY • Frequency: Number of vibrations per second is called frequency of vibrations. Frequency is expressed as Hertz (Hz). PITCH • Pitch of Sound: Pitch of sound depends on frequency of vibration. A high pitched sound has high frequency, while a low pitched sound has low frequency. AMPLITUDE • The maximum displacement of an object from its mean position while vibrating is known as its amplitude. LOUDNESS • Bigger vibrations give louder sounds. • Loudness of the sound depends on the amplitude of the sound.
