1 Arin Zachary Professor Brown UNIV 1012 13 September 2019 The Value Behind a College Degree Nowadays, going to college seems like the “normal” thing to do after high school. Personally, I never felt like college was a choice; rather something I was expected to attend when the time comes. With that mindset, the path taken is going to class everyday for four years, turning in the work, and in turn, getting a degree. In “College is not a commodity. Stop treating it like one.”, Hunter Rawlings gives a different perspective on the idea of a college degree. A degree should be worth so much more than just a piece of paper. The learning opportunities, relationships, and events a college student experiences is what someone should attend college for, not just the degree. The president in the article wanted to get across that the end goal for college should not just be to get a degree, but to get an unmatched education. In college, you will get out what you put in. Being engaged, getting involved and seeking opportunities are imperative to getting everything possible out of the college experience. This article showed me that my family is paying a great deal of money for me to be here and I should soak up every moment. I am at UCO to learn and grow, not just get a degree and leave. College is a place to explore passions and find out what to do for the rest of one’s life, so exploring options is fun and helps to learn. We are all taught from day one that we need a college 2 degree in order to be successful, but what is actually behind the degree is what matters and is what will get me far in life.
