Summary chapter 3(1) In Chapter 3, the man arrives in the valley. He parks his wagon in the front yard of Ann's house and goes inside, calling out for anyone. The man seems puzzled when he cannot find anyone. The next day, the man explores the rest of the valley and captures a chicken for dinner. The man uses some kind of instrument and takes readings of the area, including the pond. Later, the man takes a bath in Burden Creek. Ann worries that she should have warned him, but hopes that the creek is no longer poisoned. Summary chapter 3(2) The stranger, surprised by the valley’s green life, checks for radiation with a Geiger counter. He pulls off his helmet, and Ann sees his face for the first time. The stranger investigates Ann’s house but sleeps outside in his tent. The next day he goes exploring; he checks the pure brook but later bathes in the contaminated one, mistakenly assuming they come from the same source.
