Smith 1 RUNNING HEAD: Summative Examination 2 Tomas, Kindergarten, Dyslexia The disability that Tomas is showing is dyslexia. “Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they related to letters and words, which affects areas of the brain that process language” (Dyslexia, 2017). While Tomas was excited about attending school, his struggles came about when it was time for instruction. His inabiltiy to identify letters, shapes and understand simple intructions shows that Tomas has a form dyslexia. Tomas’ teacher was able to notice the changes and call a meeting wih his parents. During this meeting it would be benefical to have the EC chairperson for support to assist the teacher in explaining the next steps to assist Tomas’ in achieving academic success. Harper, 3rd grade The disability that Harper is showing is a form of Autism. “Autism refers to a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction. Characteristics that are often associated with autism are engaging in repetitive activities, and stereotyped movements” (Special Education Guide, 2019). The struggles that she is displaying unable to handle loud noises, becoming upset about the noise level and rocking back and forth all shows signs of Autism. Once Harper has been diagnosed with Autism she will be able to reach the following milestones, “children with autism tend not to reach all of their developmental milestones at the appropriate times” Rudy, 2019). Austin, 5th grade Austin’s injury is related to traumatic brain injury. “Traumatic brain injury applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition, language, memory, attention, reasoning, abstract thinking, judgement, problem solving, sensory, RUNNING HEAD: Summative Examination 3 information processing and speech” (Traumatic Brain Injury, 2019). With this disability Austin will need additional time to complete assignments, and chunking directions. While Austin may reach his developmental milestones, it will take time.
