Five of the World’s Creepiest Abandoned Travel Destinations
Sample: Brittany Campbell
If exploring ghosts towns and abandoned communist bunkers sounds like your kind of
vacation then some might call you a masochist.
But we know that true explorers embark on journeys that push the envelope. While the
idea of visiting an abandoned highschool sounds alluring, we propose kicking it up a
notch with an itinerary full of haunted hospitals, eerie hotels and even a chilling Soviet
submarine base.
Long past their prime, these creepy abandoned travel sites offer travellers the thrill of a
Hollywood jump-scare and the added bonus of an epic selfie with a piece of haunted
history!
5. The abandoned “hanging rooms” in a coal mine – West Virginia.
It’s not what you think, although the name alone will send chills down your spine. The
miner’s bathroom was referred to as “ the hanging room” during the mid-twentieth
century. Used as a changing room or locker room, the coal miners in Greene County,
usually referred to it as the bathhouse.
Now, any traveller would cringe at the sight of the long chains that hang from the ceiling.
But don’t worry, the miners merely used them to hang their wet clothing after their shift
at work.
There are many hanging rooms across the US, all it takes is a short google search to
find one and then you are on your way to an interesting experience.
4. Check yourself into the Hotel de Salto in Tequendama Falls – Columbia
Located on the edge of a 500-foot cliff overlooking the Tequendama Falls on the Bogotá
River, the haunted Hotel de Salto has been rumoured, by locals, claiming that people
use the site to commit suicide.
What was initially built as a mansion for a rich architect, was later converted into a hotel
for roughly 60 years. The last recorded use of this facility was in the 1990s. Since then,
the Hotel De Salto has been on the adventure travel bucket list of tourists looking for
their fair share of afterlife activity.
3. Take a trip to the Volterra Psychiatric Hospital– Italy
The decaying walls of Volterra Psychiatric Hospital is home to the crazy stories of
electroshock treatments and tales of doctors placing patients in tanks full of ice for
experiment purposes.
The hospital was founded in 1888 and remained open until 1978 when it was closed
due to the passing of Law 180. Italian Mental Health Act of 1978, got rid of facilities like
this one to end crazy practices only heard of straight out of an Italian horror film.
2. Visit a Creepy Abandoned Soviet Submarine Base – Russia
Located at the Pacific Submarine Fleet Nuclear Shelter in Pavlovsk, Russia, the
abandoned military base was last used in the 1980s and left unfinished. It is believed to
have been built to serve as a nuclear bunker to protect nuclear submarines, but the
creepiest part of the base features many tunnels that lead to deserted control rooms
and rumoured torture chambers.
1. Abandoned subway tunnel in Kiev– Urkaine?
The interesting thing about this subway tunnel is the fact that no one really knows when
this tunnel was last used. Travellers who have visited the abandoned site swear they’ve
heard activity in the tunnel, but it hasn’t been proven.
Hidden deep beneath the city are reminiscent of scenes from the James Cameron
classic, Aliens. Stalactites have taken over the tunnels, looking more like a cave than a
subway tunnel. Many of these tunnels are often flooded and are so rarely maintained,
that most tourists avoid venturing to this site- no matter who alluring it may seem.
Honeymoon Hotspot Workers Share Their Best (And Worst) Newlywed Stories
Call the police! We have a maid of honour with a black eye!
This is typically not the kind of thing you want to hear during your honeymoon. Ideally, the best
part of getting married is getting whisked away to paradise with the one you love– and maybe
your entire wedding party.
In theory, anyway.
Whether it’s a missed flight, a horrible hotel room or a fistfight between the Groom and the
Uncle, sometimes honeymoons don’t always go as planned.
Employees from some of the most romantic honeymoon hotspots come clean about the best
and worst newlywed stories.
1. The Groom, the Uncle and the finger
One night the hotel restaurant that I worked for was hosting a large dinner for a wedding party
that day. Of course, at that point, everyone was pretty wasted and the groom ended up getting
into a fight with the bride's uncle. The uncle bit off the groom's finger and swallowed it so he
couldn't reattach it.

2. Tapas or Topless?
I used to work at a Hilton Hotel near Disney and there was a newlywed couple that had asked
for my recommendation for a “topless bar”. I was shocked but directed them to the red light
district downtown. They promptly took a cab and I was so shocked I told my co-worker.
He shook his head and called me an idiot, “They probably asked for a Tapas Bar”, he said.

3. Way too loud
A young couple checked in and they asked for a quiet discrete room, fair enough. We put them
in a far corner and they appreciated it. They would come by the restaurant to eat and we'd see
them leave the hotel and come back at all hours of the day or night. Even housekeeping was
given a break because 6 of the 8 nights they had the “do not disturb” sign up.
Days later a family of four checks in and we placed them into a room across from the
newlyweds. The family of four calls down to the front desk, livid. The honeymooners were being
rather loud in their room and the other couple, the one with the kids, had grown stressed over
the noise.
The manager offered to move their room, but a fight erupted in the hall and the cops had to stop
the fight.

4. Soaked in pee!
I manage I small but fancy B&B in New England. While the newlyweds partied in the main room,
their friends had the run of the place. Around 1 am I get a knock on my door by the drunkest
man I had ever seen, asking if I had any more booze.
This, after explaining that I do not drink, several times earlier in the evening. In the morning they
all left without getting breakfast--rushing out as fast as possible. In a pile on the main bathroom
floor were about 6 towels. Every one of them soaked in pee!

5. Fire in the Housekeeping Closet
Working in a big hotel, we had a honeymoon suite. One day, a small fire broke out in a
housekeeping closet on the same floor as the honeymoon suite. The fire alarms and sprinklers
go off on the floor and the Fire Department responds within just a few minutes and proceeds to
put 10,000 gallons of water on the burning embers.
As a result, the entire floor was covered in water!
In the meantime, we had to manually check all rooms to ensure that everyone had safely
evacuated from the destruction. I knocked on the Honeymoon suite door, no answer. So I take
my keycard to open the door and the honeymooners were going at it, full swing. Through the
alarms, smoke, fire truck, and sprinklers!
