 Noli Me Tangere is the first novel written by Filipino patriot and national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal
in 1887 and published in Germany. The story line goes detailed with the society of the
Philippines during Spanish colonial period and features aristocracy behind poverty and abuse of
colonialists.
 In the excerpt of Gina Apostol’s novel The Revolution According to Raymundo Mata, the
“revolutionary act of reading” is explored through the eyes of a young man, a high school student
from the Ateneo. Reading it makes you imagine what it would have bben like to be alive during
those heady days of revolution. In this excerpt, he reads the book Noli Me Tangere by Jose Rizal,
which was given to him by his friend, Father Gaspar, a Filipino priest.
Question:
1. What do you know about the publication of Noli Me Tangere and how it affected the Philippines?
b. ANALYSIS:
1. Do you think that novels in the Philippines are as important as they used to be when the Noli was
published in 1887? Are people still inspired by novels?
2. What is it about reading long texts, such as short stories or novels that makes it different from
reading tweets and Facebook status posts? What is the importance of literature for the facebook
generation?
c. ABSTRACTION:
In Apostol’s novel, Raymundo Mata is with Dr. Pio Valenzuela during this errand in Dapitan.
Raymundo Mata is Dr. Pio Valenzuela’s decoy who will help him gain audience with Rizal. In order
to distract the Spanish wards, their script is that Dr. Pio Valenzuela will consult with dr. Rizal about
raymundo Mata’s night blindness so that the doctor’s errand would come off as a medical rather than
a political mission.
d. APPLICATION/ASSESSMENT:

the past and the importance of reading and society in the present day. On a piece of paper, write the
