Review
Alcohol
Drinking alcohol is socially acceptable in
the UK. It contains the drug ethanol.
It is legal to buy alcohol over the age of
18. In some countries you have to be 21
to drink while in other parts of the world
alcohol is illegal.
Alcohol is a drug because it alters the
way the body works.
One part of the body that is affected is
the nervous system.
Alcohol is a depressant as it causes
slower reaction times.
The consequences can be serious … or very embarrassing.
Units of alcohol
The more alcohol a person drinks, the more and the
quicker they are affected. Different alcoholic drinks
contain different amounts of alcohol. One way to
compare the strength of different drinks is to compare
how many units of alcohol they contain.
The recommended maximum is: Men and women - 14 units per week
It takes about one hour to remove one unit of alcohol
from the body.
But just how much is one unit?
Alcohol and reaction time
Alcohol affects your nervous system.
It slows down your reaction time.
If you see danger it takes you longer to respond to it.
That’s one reason why drinking alcohol means you are
more likely to have an accident.
Alcohol also reduces your judgement.
That’s another reason why drinking alcohol means you
are more likely to have an accident.
Alcohol – an addictive drug
Most people drink alcohol socially and because they
enjoy the taste.
Drinking too much alcohol can make people become
addicted.
The body develops a tolerance to alcohol.
That means they need to drink more alcohol to get the
same effect.
An alcoholic is someone who cannot get through life
without drinking.
