Patricia Bernadette B. Fajardo 11-Venerable Mother Ignacia Reflection Writing In the movie “THE MATRIX” find the idea of Plato’s allegory of the cave, Descartes res extensa, res cogitans, evil genius and post modernism. This is the summary of the story according to my research Thomas A. Anderson is a man living two lives. By day he is an average computer programmer and by night a hacker known as Neo. Neo has always questioned his reality, but the truth is far beyond his imagination. Neo finds himself targeted by the police when he is contacted by Morpheus, a legendary computer hacker branded a terrorist by the government. Morpheus awakens Neo to the real world, a ravaged wasteland where most of humanity have been captured by a race of machines that live off of the humans' body heat and electrochemical energy and who imprison their minds within an artificial reality known as the Matrix. As a rebel against the machines, Neo must return to the Matrix and confront the agents: super-powerful computer programs devoted to snuffing out Neo and the entire human rebellion. The idea of Plato,s allegory of the cave is about the human perception and to gain more knowledge through the senses is no more than opinion and that in order to have real knowledge. We must gain it into philosophical reasoning. And I can see it in the movie when Neo start using his senses to gain more knowledge and to become real all of this he is sit on a place where only the computer can control him but what is happening in his mind is also happening in his real body because this is the truth. For the Descartes res extensa according to my research it’s Res extensa is one of the three substances described by René Descartes in his Cartesian ontology (often referred to as "radical dualism"), alongside res cogitans and God. Translated from Latin, "res extensa" means "extended thing". Descartes often translated it as "corporeal substance" but for me it means that res mean thing and extensa mean extended and for my opinion thing extended it means that when you learn to one thing it is not ended immediately it just extend and extend and I can see it in the movie when the process that Neo have many things put on his body to absorb more energy and to become strong. The Descartes res cogitans according to my research is a thinking thing (as the mind or soul) but for me it means that res is thing and cogitans means thinking and in short the res cogitans is all about the things that is thinking and for me if you are thinking you think well and what happened next and I can see it in the movie when Neo keep on hiding but when the girl talk to him he think well and trust the girl or not and because Neo use his mind to think well he is now a strong man and he can control what’s on his mind . The evil genius according to my research is the evil demon, also known as evil genius the evil demon presents a complete illusion of an external world, including other minds but for me is first the evil is the one that make a bad things to people and the evil don’t have care for the feelings of the people because by doing a simple bad action the evil hurts the people while the genius for me is the one that can do and make whatever he/she want without the help of others because his/her have a great mind and can think fast to solve the specific problem and when you combined it evil genius is a bad person because by his/her doing and this evil person has a great mind to think well and I see this in the movie when Neo do because he want to protect himself to the other people he think a way on how he protect himself and by this being genius is show because he can think fast. And the last is the past modernism is all truth is limited, approximate, and is constantly evolving (Nietzsche, Kuhn, Popper). No theory can ever be proved true - we can only show that a theory is false (Popper). No theory can ever explain all things consistently (Godel's incompleteness theorem). There is always a separation between our mind & ideas of things and the thing in itself (Kant). Physical reality is not deterministic (Copenhagen interpretation of quantum physics, Bohr). Science concepts are mental constructs (logical positivism, Mach, Carnap). And this are according to some philosopher but for my understanding it is the real view of human life of a person or group of people and I can see it in the movie when Neo didn’t know that he is the matrix the real matrix because he know that he is a simple person but one day theres a group of people saying that Neo is the real one one matrix.
