Catapult Challenge

Problem: You are an engineer who specializes in designing cool toys and machines for games. You were recently contacted by the SuperFun Toy Company to help design a machine called a catapult for a game that will launch Ping-Pong balls at a series of targets. To ensure that children and adults alike will love the game, you need to make sure the catapult is both accurate and precise.

Constraints: The only building materials available to you are listed below.

Materials List: Each group needs:

 cardboard base (6 x 6 inches)

 ~48 inches of masking tape

 plastic spoon

 3 rubber bands

Procedures:

8 Popsicle sticks

4 straws

1 Ping-Pong ball

There are no specific procedures for this activity. You will be working to construct a catapult that we will use tomorrow to complete to see whose catapult has the highest accuracy as well as the highest precision.

Data: (complete during the class challenge)

1.

2.

Trail 1:

Where did it hit on the target?

Trail 2:

Trail 3:

Trail 4:

Give me two observations about your launch:

Any special observations? Any issues occur?

Questions: Complete sentences… and be sure to answer ALL parts of the question.

1.

Precision is defined as…

2.

Accuracy is defined as…

3.

How would you categorize your catapult in the terms of precision and accuracy?

4.

Whose group was most precise? Why?

5.

Whose group was most accurate? Why?

6.

Was there a group that was both precise and accurate? How did you determine this?
