Course Description: Topics: Groups, subgroups, cyclic groups, generating sets, permutations, orbits, cycles, alternating groups, cosets, Lagrange’s Theorem, direct products, finite abelian groups, homomorphisms, normal subgroups, factor groups, simple groups, group actions, isomorphism theorems, Sylow’s theorems. Prerequisite: Math 111. Textbook: A coursa on algebra, by A. Feyzioğlu, availabe from this link. Problem Session: Each week, some problems will be assigned to be discussed and solved in a problem session. Suggested problems: From time to time, I’ll offer you several homework problems. They won’t be collected nor graded, but I recommend that you solve them. Grading Examinations: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam. To be eligible for the final exam, you must get at least 70 points out of 200 from your two midterms. In the exams, you must explain your reasoning in order to get credit. Basis of evaluation: The weights of the first midterm examination, second midterm examination and the final examination are 25%, 25%, 50%. In addition, your class participation may strongly influence me to have a favourable disposition towards you.
