AP Biology – Organelle Campaign
Period:
The nucleus’ term as head of the cell is coming to an end and Election Day is fast
approaching! Your group has to run a campaign to get your assigned cell organelle
elected as The Most Important Organelle. You will have to argue that without your
organelle, the cell and the organism, and consequently the world as we know it will
collapse. You will present your candidate to the class on Friday, January 25th.
1. Campaign Poster. (10 points) You are expected to display a campaign poster –
sharing important details of your organelle. This should be very visual, think of the iconic
Obama Hope poster or Rosie the Riveter.
2. Campaign Advertisement. (5 points) In addition to your poster, you need to create
a 30 second radio or TV spot that describes how totally awesome your organelle
is. Include a catchy graphic, slogan, or jingle with details on how the structure of the
organelle relates the function of the organelle. You will have thirty seconds to read/act
out /sing your campaign ad.
It is crucial for you to make the connection for your voter about why your organelle is the
most important. So tell your voter why your organelle is important for survival of the
organism. Can you link that to survival of an ecosystem? The whole entire world?
3. Mudslinging. (5 points) The fun stuff. You need to develop a smear campaign
against one other organelle (assigned). Look up which diseases are associated with
mutations and/or malfunctions with the organelle and create some kind of literature
against it (poster, pamphlet, fact sheet, T shirt, radio ad, etc). You will have an
additional 30 seconds during your presentation to do some mudslinging.
Election Day: Friday, January 25th. Present your campaign poster, ad, and smear
campaign. You may want to try to deflect the smear campaign that will hit you. Limit
the poster description to 1 minute, the ad to 30 seconds, and the mudslinging to 30
seconds. You have 2 minutes for your total presentation!
After all the presentations, students will complete a ballot (cannot vote for your
own). The number of votes you get is part of your grade (0-2 points). Pro Tip: to earn
votes make your campaign informative, entertaining, and eye catching. Quality of the
campaign is key to success; be neat and be original! (3 points) Your poster, and
transcripts of your presentations should be submitted at the end of your presentation.
May the best organelle win!
