EDUCATE TO ELEVATE FINAL GROUP PROJECT
Presentations Due Monday, December 17th
Guiding Question: Is education the great equalizer?
Prompt: What do you believe is the value of being educated, and how does it have the potential
to transform the lives of those who are marginalized in our country?
Task:
Create a Google Slideshow that supports or refutes your position on the above prompt by
incorporating closely analyzed credible research (from class and your own), by taking a clear
position on what your group believes to be the value of education while simultaneously
addressing an achievement gap issue (race/ethnicity, gender, socio-economic status) that
needs further social attention. Ultimately, your presentation will address the question: Can
education be the great equalizer? In addition, it will propose a solution to help resolve an
achievement gap issue while asserting your own personal beliefs concerning the power of
education.
THE WHY?
- To practice our ability to synthesize multiple sources
- To refine our ability to take a clear position
- To practice selecting, citing and analyzing credible text evidence
- To provide an opportunity to reflect on the power of one’s education
- To identify and reflect on the educational experiences of others
- To practice collaborating with your peers
- To problem solve
- To practice reading, annotating and analyzing college level texts
Your Slideshow Should Include:
***All slides should be visually appealing. Remember an image accompanying your text will
help contextualize your position and presentation.
SLIDES 1-2: Our Opinion on the Value of Education- State what your group deems to be the
purpose and value of an education (this is your opinion on what we are suppose to get out of
our education).
SLIDE 3: Take a Position- Do you believe education has the power to transform the lives of the
marginalized AND WHY? Your entire presentation needs to link back to your position through
carefully analyzed evidence, so make sure your position is clear. This is your “thesis statement”
slide. It should be thoughtful and complex.
SLIDES 4-6: Analyze Sources- Analyze at least THREE sources that support your position. This is
where you use researched text evidence to support your claim through in depth analysis. Each

of these slides should have a contextualized MLA cited quote with a paragraph of analysis
below it. You can use ONE of my sources, but must find TWO additional sources on your own.
You can have up to five sources if you really want to go cray.
SLIDES 7-8: Introduction/Background on an Achievement Gap Issue- Outline an achievement
gap issue that relates to education (focus on either race, gender, or socio-economic status) to
teach us about systems or structures in America that still currently challenge or limit the
opportunities for specific groups. Maybe you focus in on a place (Redwood, Marin, Oakland,
Alabama, etc.) or maybe you focus in on a grade level (elementary, high school, or college) or
maybe you focus in on a school topic like literacy, math or motivating learners. This is where
you teach us about how we still need to improve as a society to further identify current
problems or flaws in our education system. A list of research ideas and browser search ideas
are included below.
SLIDES 9-10: Propose a Solution- Your group just identified a problem, so now try to fix it! This
is where you work as a group to invent and suggest a realistic solution. Perhaps the solution is
something you came across in your research and perhaps it worked in a school district across
the country, but the schools in California have never tried it? Or maybe your group has an
entirely original solution to the problem? Propose it and convince us. You are our future change
makers. We trust in you.
SLIDES 11-12: Conclusion: Offer up a powerful and compelling conclusion that responds to the
overarching question: Is education the great equalizer? Restate your case in a refreshing new
way. Leave us inspired, hopeful and maybe even a little optimistic.
SLIDE 13: Works Cited Slide
Areas of Research to Consider When Exploring the Achievement Gap:
Racial:
-evidence of the racial achievement gap in specific subject areas (math & reading)
-the racial achievement gap in early childhood
-motivation gap
-factors contributing to academic success for Hispanics, African Americans, or other minority
groups
-attempts at narrowing the racial achievement gap
Gender:
-gender gap in literacy
-gender gap in math and sciences
-gender gap in graduation rates
-gender gap in lifetime earnings
-possible cause of gender achievement gap in the United States
Socio-economic:
-income and class influences on education
-limited access to resources (technology, school supplies or even food) and how this impairs
learning
-how access to technology can narrow the achievement gap
-investment in early childhood and its impact on a child’s future learning
-parent socialization
