Northside Enterprise Inc., 5/26 William St, Brookvale Tel: 9905 5377 Email: northside@pacific.net.au Our new Manager TAZIA HUMPHREYS We take this opportunity to congratulate Tazia Humphreys on becoming Northside’s Manager! Tazia has been working at Northside for almost six years. During this time she has been a Trainer, a Case Manager, a Coordinator of Leisure Link services we provide and has now progressed as service Manager, working with the CEO and all staff to ensure we continue providing quality services and transition successfully into a future under the NDIS. We look forward to working with Tazia as the services Manager and support her in her post-graduate studies in disabilities at Sydney University, which also gives Northside an advantage in keeping abreast of the latest research findings and new approaches to supporting people with disabilities . Our previous Manager, Paul Mitchell had moved to work in the South-West area of Sydney also in disability services and we continue keeping in touch. Likewise, our Team Leader, CP, Leslie Kelcey had resigned with plans to move to live out of Sydney. The staff and service users were sorry to see Paul and Leslie go after being at Northside for eleven and nine years respectively. We wish them well and hope to see them again. INVITING SERVICE USERS/PARENTS/GUARDIANS/CARERS AS STAKEHOLDERS IN NORTHSIDE’S SERVICE PROVISION TO PARTICIPATE IN THE REVIEW OF NORTHSIDE’S POLICIES AND PROCEDURES As many of you are aware Northside has been working on preparations for its Policy and Procedure Manual review to reflect the Six new Disability Service Standards endorsed by ADHC in December 2013, to develop new tools for Choice and Decision making for our service users with varying degrees of communication skills as part of Person Centred service delivery (newly developed tools have been applied and tried for preference and usefulness by service users for some months now), to consider changes that the new Disability Inclusion Act will require compliance with etc. Matt trying out one of newly developed Choice and Decision making We use this opportunity also to invite service users, family members, carers, advocates or guardians of Northside’s service users interested in contributing to Northside Policy and Procedure review to please let our CEO, Ina, know by mid-November 2014. Northside plans to commence transition to the new Policy and Procedure Manual from March 2015 and by then to have completed service user/family input and contribution by way of consultation, feedback and meetings. Northside is developing plans for sessions during our last week in December to ensure every service user becomes familiar with changes in legislation, human rights inclusion, and policy and procedures reviews and will encourage input and suggestions in this way as well. We look forward to hearing from you and, once again, having your input into our Policies and Procedures. Please contact the CEO. IMPORTANT LEGISLATION CHANGE: The DISABILITY INCLUSION ACT (DIA) will replace the Disability Services Act (DSA). The planned start date for the Act and Regulation is 3 December 2014. The new legislation will: give effect to our international human rights obligations and ensure NSW is at the forefront of recognising and upholding rights for people with disability; build the capacity of people with disability, service providers and the NSW Government in readiness for NDIS transition by focusing on individualised funding arrangements, safeguards and quality control mechanisms; drive social and policy change to make communities more accessible and inclusive for people with disability. For some this has involved using technology for the first time and for others extending their existing skills. Jeenee Mobile is a non for profit telco that has been developed to provide easy to use and tailored hardware/software technology solutions for people living with disabilities and other people, including the general community. In September 2014, Northside became a Jeenee Make A Difference Partner and will receive 11 donated Jeenee phones for some of our service users. Some of our service users have been trialing the phones during the technology sessions. Jeenee is very easy to use and can be customised to individual needs. Phones hones we are receiving are: An LG Optimus L7 Smartphone customised with the Jeenee Mobile Big Launcher. A free connection for 24 months with access to an emergency Help Service and GPS Locator Services. More information is found on the Jeenee website www.jeenee.org.au We are looking forward to receiving 11 phones soon and continuing to see our service users growing in their ability to use technology. Mandy loves her iPad ABOVE: Luke trying out the iPad with Sue Werner from Community Connections Australia, who has been coming to Northside every Wednesday during the past several months to facilitate, encourage and train our service users in the use of technology towards greater personal independence and increase in living skills. Mobile phones, Tablets, iPads with new and interesting programs and activities are helping us provide more opportunities and choices for communication and are certainly a hit at Northside. LEFT: Communication is very important to Sifa and he has discovered new ways of combining technology with his learning activities. Jim Baldwin from the Dee Why/Cromer Scouts came to Northside and did a program and worked with our service users on Recycling. Apart from learning more about recycling the group sorted materials into the various rubbish bins (paper/ cardboard, bottles/cans, garbage) pretty well and were very creative in reusing rubbish and vegetation for artwork. This month was the first session that the Scouts came to work with us, and are very keen to work with us in the future as we are to work with them.
