Volume XIV 14th Edition Hello friends, the days are still warm but the nights are getting pretty crisp in the Northwest. We have had a nice dry warm summer, I for one am not ready for the weather to change. We have had a busy summer here at Country Coach, the word is spreading that we are open and that we have the best service techs to take care of your motorhome. Our website, countrycoach.com, receives over 11,000 visits per month. Thank you to all you loyal Country Coach owners and supporters for keeping us in your headlights. Thank you for bringing your service, repair and upgrade work to our shop, and for looking to Country Coach when you are in the market to buy a first class motor home. We are doing some repair and upgrades to our facility as well. A fresh coat of paint to the office structure and some roof repairs to some of the buildings are in process. Many maintenance items were deferred by the old company and then were never done due to the bankruptcy. Eventually we will have everything shipshape. Everyone here is excited about the 2015 Allure prototype. We have shared some of our plans with those of you who visited our facility this summer. It will be 45 ft. on our own 500 HP, Dynomax chassis with four slides; we are doing the very popular bath and a half, front kitchen, expansive living room with 55 inch TV and surround sound. Projected completion date should be late spring 2015. Our intention is to build a production run of twenty five of this model after the considerable testing and certification work is done. We decided on the Allure for several reasons, one is that we have all new molds completed for a fresh new look and it falls about the mid price point of our product lineup. We will then add other models and lengths as we increase production. Remember, winter is a good time to bring your coach in for those needed repairs and exciting upgrades that keep your motorhome looking and running like new. Until we meet again have fun and travel safe. The weather has been extremely hot and so have sales! Going into the season, we had dropped prices on some of the coaches, did some additional advertising and had in place the nicest inventory of coaches since I’ve been here. All of that added up to record sales for the season and although our weather is starting to cool I don’t see any drop in sales activity and if anything demand might be stronger. We’ve been selling coaches before we can place them on our website and my biggest challenge for now is to continue to keep pace with this strong demand and find the quality coaches out there to replace them. By the end of this week, we will have an ‘09 Magna 45’ Vivaldi floorplan, an ‘08 Magna 45’ Rembrandt floorplan, a ‘06 Magna 45’ Rembrandt floorplan, and a ‘06 36’ Inspire that hopefully we will have on our website by next week. Also I believe we will have coming soon a ‘08 Allure 43’ Founders Edition. All of these coaches will be a great addition to our current inventory. I’m still looking for Intrigues and Siskiyou Summit Allures so if you’re thinking of selling, give us a call because the market is hot right now! Also those of you who are just looking at our website and not finding what you are looking for to purchase, remember we have a large selection of coaches that are not on the website but are available for sale. Just give me a call and there’s a great chance I can find you what you’re looking for. This is the best time of year to be in the Willamette Valley. Great football, salmon fishing is red hot, the weather is usually warm and the trees are starting to turn. Soon we will start seeing the snowbirds coming through and that’s always a great time of year as well. We get to enjoy the humor of a lot of our friends to the North. Hope everyone has a great fall season and as always if you are in the area, please stop by and say hello we enjoy hearing all your stories and we get a chance to share with you the exciting things happening at Country Coach! David Hyde, Sales Department sales1@countrycoach.com 4 Consignment Sales Victor and Eileen Marx Victor and Eileen are the owners of a 2002 Country Coach Magna. We got a chance to meet this inspirational family, while they were recently visiting Country Coach. Victor Marx is an expert martial artist, former U.S. Marine, filmmaker and a sought after speaker. Because of Victor’s busy speaking schedule, traveling by coach is a must for keeping the family together. They were very excited to be traveling to Idaho on their way to Washington, DC. Victor is the founding Director of the non-profit organization, All Things Possible, which works on a global scale to free children from abuse and the effects of its trauma. As an advocate and agent for the rescue and restoration of victimized children, Victor sheds a light on the silent epidemic of child abuse and reaches out to abused and wounded youth with his message of hope. Victor himself, survived and overcame a childhood wrought with unspeakable abuse and heartache. Now he shares his own journey from child abuse victim and troubled youth, to Marine, martial artist and ultimately advocate with groups across the country. His story crosses all boundaries, providing inspiration and encouragement to audiences including incarcerated youth, military personnel, NFL players, corporations, faith groups, high schools and universities. 5 Owner Spotlight Victor brings a message of hope and redemption to the front lines of the hurting and disenfranchised, speaking most frequently to incarcerated youth as well as children in the foster care system. Best known for being the “Fastest Gun Disarm Man,” he holds the world record for this amazing feat that has been seen by over 16 million people worldwide on YouTube; Victor is considered a master of martial arts. He has held this title for several years and proudly displays it on the side of their Country Coach. Drawing from his half a century of fascinating life experiences, he uses humor and real-life transparency to captivate and engage his audience. He shares insights and life-changing takeaways on leadership and overcoming life’s greatest challenges, including PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). He is able to speak of these issues because of his own struggles and his ability to overcome some of life’s impossible situations. He has been an interior tactics instructor as well as a speaker and inspirational mentor to many who serve or have served with some of the most elite military personnel in the special operations forces community. Victor’s life story has been chronicled in his autobiography, “The Victor Marx Story” and in a documentary film of the same title. His life is marked by a relentless dedication to the protection of children of all ages and to the healing that is possible for abuse and trauma survivors. Victor recognizes that all of this would not be possible without his faith and belief that with God, All Things Are Possible. Victor resides in Southern California with his wife and five children. 6 Owner Spotlight Maria is perfect at the front desk— multi tasking to the max! Kevin is the perfect definition of customer service. He was a comforting contact via email months ago. His demeanor is full of caring, his knowledge is outstanding, his explanations are clear and concise and he is straight forward in sharing. Bryan is outstanding in his knowledge, mechanical ability and his ability to share his knowledge and provide us with a feeling of “I’ve got this”. He is extremely valuable to Country Coach. He came in early on day two (so we could leave on schedule) Wow! That just doesn’t happen anymore! Greg was a voice of comfort when we were stuck in B.C. Our hydraulic fan’s seal blew creating a smoky (pre-fire) mess in the back of our coach. We were towed to a truck service center who really didn’t want us there and refused to assist us in locating a replacement. Greg from the first call helped us to understand what we needed to do in order to track down the part. He took multiple calls from us, searched diligently for the part and provided hope for us. We know where ever we are there is a lifeline at Country Coach who will do everything possible to help us get back on the road. Thanks Country Coach for all you have done for us. We feel confident that our 2006 Inspire is in great condition because of your care, knowledge and experts providing the best service ever!!! John installed our hydralift— excellent service, attention to detail. Great job, John. Kelly Campion Arthur & Sharon Simpson Gary & Julia Kirby 7 So glad you guys are back in business! Bruce Wald We had a lot of issues resolved in one stop! Sherri Bartosz Second time back! Just as great as before! The staff is awesome! Bernie and Dan Clapp Very glad to discover you’re back up and running. Great! Impressed with knowledge and professionalism of the crews—and Daniel especially. Thanks so much. Bruce and Lynda Davis Excellent service. We had paint work done and several other service items. Kevin, Zach and Daniel were very helpful. Would certainly come back if needed. Testimonials We RVers are always quick to complain when we don’t get the quality of service when it is praise worthy. competent enough to find and fix. That issue now seems to be resolved. On July 6 through July 10 my wife and I took our coach to your workshop for some repairs. During that period I met you in the hallway and we visited briefly. During that visit I mentioned to you how happy I am that you have reactivated the CC repair facility. We have had several disappointments when attempting to get repairs made to our coach during the past ten years. Those disappointments even apply to all of the times we attempted to get repairs made at the old CC repair facility. Although we avoided returning to CC since it reopened under your management we are now very happy that we finally decided to return. As previously mentioned we were very happy with John Emanuel’s oversight of our repairs, but we know he relied on other technicians to assist with some of the repairs. We were advised that Eric Wolf worked on the front axle and Daniel Emanuel installed the new window blinds and reprogrammed the electric window awnings. We hope that you will pass on to all of them that we recognize the quality of their work and we appreciate the attitude they displayed during our visit. We were very hesitant to return to CC because of the poor service we received from the old CC repair facility and only returned because we had an inherent issue with the front axle alignment that we were advised could only be addressed by your specialized repair facility. Along with the front axle issue we had several other issues that were addressed by your shop personnel. The lead technician assigned to us during our recent visit was John Emanuel. We were very happy with John’s attitude and the way John led the efforts to address our issues. John did some of the repairs himself and one of the issues he addressed was a leaky chassis air conditioning system which we had repeatedly attempted to have repaired at other shops that didn’t seem 8 Johnny & Barbara Thomley Thank you so much for your help— your tech was right on with his advice and we are now enjoying our holiday. The fix took all of 6 minutes best $25 we ever spent we will surely ask for your advice again. Pamela Lupasko Always excellent service!! We appreciate you all! The next time you check into a campground, look around and try to guess which of your fellow campers are on a temporary vacation and which lucky folks are on a permanent road trip. Chances are, you’ll be neighbours with at least one or two “location independent entrepreneurs,” smart folks who earn their income working from their home, wherever they park it. Improving electronic communications has helped both high- and low-tech RV entrepreneurs, making it easier for them to stay in touch with customers and suppliers. It's been particularly helpful for RVers who own businesses in fixed locations that they operate in absentee fashion. With just an internet connection and a laptop computer, business savvy full-time RVers can operate a home-based business anywhere from the shores of Key West to sandy beaches of the West Coast. Today, many younger RVers aren’t waiting until retirement to fulfil their travel dreams. These free spirits are taking their small businesses on the road and changing their office view as often as they please. An endless variety of businesses can be operated from the comfort of an RV. Perhaps one of the greatest rewards is being able to change your office view as often as you wish in order to work from stunning destinations like the Rocky Mountains or the California coast. Before attempting to implement any business idea, it’s highly advisable to seek a few professional opinions from others who are leading similar lifestyles. Find out how seasoned RVing entrepreneurs earn money on the road by joining RVing discussion forums at websites such as escapees.com and RV.net. Study business books like Dave Ramsey’s EntreLeadership (daveramsey.com), and then make an appointment at a local Small Business Development Center (sbdc.org) for specific help implementing your plan. SBDC centers can be found across the country and are a program of the Small Business Administration. Their experienced business advisers help all types of entrepreneurs launch new businesses. And please remember to get out and enjoy all of those reasons that you wanted to work from the road in the first place! 10 Accounting Ring, Ring, Ring! A dirty intake filter will restrict air flow causing decreased cooling ability, buildup of debris on the evaporation coil, and excess wear and tear on the other components of the roof top unit. Dometic Corporation (Duo-Therm) and RVP (Coleman) both recommend checking and cleaning the air intake filters every 2 to 4 weeks of operation in order to keep the system cooling at peak efficiency. If you are in a high dust environment, checking every week may be necessary to keep the filter clean and debris free. Most new units use a foam or mesh style filter medium that can be blown out with air or cleaned with soap and water. Always allow the filter to completely dry, as a wet filter will attract more dust and clog easier. Replace filter material every other year or if it becomes dry and brittle before that time. Filter material is normally cut to fit, so be sure to purchase enough to do the job and completely cover the intake grill without any gaps for unfiltered air to enter the intake plenum. Country Coach’s parts department would be happy to assist you with replacement filter material when you find it necessary to do so. On most 90’s and early 2000 coaches filter replacement is easy, remove the intake grill assembly from the ceiling interior plenum, remove and clean the filter, and then reinstall the intake grill. COLEMAN / RVP DOMETIC / DUO THERM 13 Tech/Service Replacing A/C Filters (continued) On newer 2000 coaches access to the intake plenum is a little more difficult on some models due to decorative ceiling covers that hide the intake/output ducts and contain additional lighting for the interior living area. These decorative panels have removable sections that allow easy access to the plenums and filter assemblies. The first thing to know is how to determine the location of the panel section that comes off to gain access to the plenum. Looking at and feeling for the ducts that are between the panel and ceiling will give you an indication of where to start looking. Output ducts have a deflector that is part of the duct and intake ducts do not. If you look into the intake duct at an angle, you should see the Coleman plenum cover (pictured earlier). OUTPUT DUCT WITH DEFLECTOR INTAKE DUCT NO DEFLECTOR COLEMAN INTAKE PLENUM Once you have located the correct duct and can visually see the intake plenum it’s time to look 14 Tech/Service Replacing A/C Filters (continued) at the decorative panel to determine what to remove to gain access to the filter. The pieces to remove are almost always a section covered with leather or pieces of wood trim that will be hiding screws. The panel should be directly below the area observed that has the intake plenum cover and will need to be gently removed. Pieces are secured with high strength Velcro or a metal spring clip. The pieces should have some give to them; so if they feel really secure you are probably not on the right piece. Panels attached with screws normally have 4 screws holding the panel section in a diamond pattern. Once the section is removed you should see the intake plenum cover and can then remove the filter access section to clean the filter. There are several other panel designs not pictured but using the information supplied in this article should allow you to find, disassemble, and clean the AC filters in your coach as needed. 15 Tech/Service The Pacbrake exhaust brake on my 2000 Intrigue occasionally sticks on, what steps should I take to correct the problem? A sticking exhaust brake can be caused by a variety of problems including a weakened return spring, sticking pneumatic cylinder, ‘butterfly spindle seizure, carbonization, distorted butterfly plate or it could also be an electrical problem such as a sticking relay or poor ground. I would start my diagnosis by gaining access to the exhaust brake, then, with the ignition switch in the off position, and ensuring that the engine has cooled sufficiently to avoid skin burns, remove the clevis pin (see ‘A’ on drawing) that attaches the pneumatic cylinder to the ‘butterfly spindle’. This spindle is attached to a round disc (butterfly) inside the exhaust brake housing that blocks off air flow from the engine exhaust system in the engaged position. Now manually engage the exhaust brake butterfly and check for smooth operation throughout its full travel. If any significant resistance is observed during this procedure, then apply a high temperature synthetic lubricant such as PACBRAKE part# 18037 to the locations shown at points ‘B’ on the drawing, and cycle the butterfly spindle several times to work the lubricant in. If this does not correct the resistance, or if the butterfly spindle sticks in the fully engaged position, the exhaust brake assembly must be removed for further inspection, cleaning, and possible replacement. A butterfly plate that is stiff, distorted, or touches the interior surface of the exhaust brake housing in the fully engaged position will necessitate replacement of the complete assembly. To check the pneumatic cylinder, reconnect it to the butterfly spindle using the clevis pin removed earlier, then with your hands at a safe distance from the assembly, have an assistant cycle the ignition switch on and off a few times to actuate the exhaust brake. Assuming that the air system is fully pressurized, the pneumatic cylinder should extend and retract with a sharp snap. A cylinder that seems to drag during this test may benefit from lubrication both to the rod while in the extended position, and to the piston by placing a few drops inside the air port once the valve has been removed. 16 Tech/Service The Pacbrake exhaust brake on my 2000 Intrigue occasionally sticks on, what steps should I take to correct the problem? (continued) A cylinder that snaps out but is somewhat lazy on the return stroke may indicate a defective rapid exhaust valve (see ‘C’ on drawing), or a weak internal return spring which will necessitate replacement of the cylinder at minimum, but preferably the complete exhaust brake assembly depending on its condition. If everything checks out mechanically, then with the ignition turned on and engine not running, check the voltage at the power wire to the exhaust brake pneumatic solenoid valve (see ‘D’ on drawing) that is located at the forward end of the bed deck engine access opening. With the headlights turned on, and dash gauge illumination set to full brightness, the voltage measurement at this wire should be less than 0.5volts DC. If higher, then add a 1amp diode to the ground wire for the exhaust brake warning light on the dash (see ‘E’ on drawing). The stripe on the diode (cathode) must be directed towards the ground (away from the warning light), and the above test should be repeated after installation to verify that the voltage is now within specifications. Additionally, the exhaust brake relay should be replaced as a matter of course when any problems with this system arise. To access the relay, remove the cover from the Allison VIM (Vehicle Interface Module), which is a black plastic enclosure approximately 9” square, and 3” deep, and mounted on the ceiling of the steering compartment. This cover will be retained by nine small metric hex head bolts. With the cover removed to reveal six Bosch relays and two fuses, locate the relay that is identified as SFO2 on the circuit board and replace it with a similar 12volt, single pole, double throw relay. These relays are readily available at almost all car parts stores and are typically used during the installation of accessory fog or driving lamps. Most come with a mounting tab that should be cut off in this application due to the close proximity of the relay to the enclosures cover. 17 Tech/Service The Pacbrake exhaust brake on my 2000 Intrigue occasionally sticks on, what steps should I take to correct the problem? (continued) Should the exhaust brake continue to stick, and no problems can be located with the electrical and pneumatic control circuit, then the exhaust brake assembly should be replaced. The exhaust brake is designed for frequent cycling during daily transit and can develop problems - such as a stiff or seized butterfly plate - with infrequent usage as is commonplace on a motorhome. Starting the engine and then subsequently stopping it before it has reached normal operational temperature will amplify the problem, particularly in humid conditions where moisture is developed within the engine and exhaust system at initial startup. To avoid problems with this system following periods of extended inactivity, lubricate all moving parts of the exhaust brake assembly (see ‘B’ on drawing) every four months and periodically start your engine, allow it to reach full operating temperature, then with the engine not running, cycle the ignition switch from off to on several times to actuate the exhaust brake. With just 36 coaches in attendance at its Fourth Annual Friendship Rally, held August 4—8, this generous group gave $8,565 to benefit two great food banks in the Junction City and Harrisburg area where all Country Coaches were built. God’s Storehouse in Harrisburg, and Junction City Local Aid will each receive $4,282.50. At the 2014 Friendship Rally charity auction, Ron Lee, owner of Country Coach Corporation, autographed a Vern Meighen-engineered Country Coach covered wagon that Meighen had jokingly called the 2014 Country Coach Allure. Meighen, a lifetime club member, built several dozen covered wagons in his wood shop several years ago as rally centerpieces. When approached to sell the centerpieces to benefit charity fundraising efforts that year, he said, “Do you think anyone would pay money for them?” Indeed! Those wagons have raised thousands of dollars for rally charities over the past several years. The one sold at the 2014 event sold twice during the auction. Lee was the first buyer who then gifted it back to Meighen. Members often donate their prized wagon and let it be auctioned for the rally charity, the news release noted. Earlier in 2014 at the Country Coach Friends Spring Rally in Beaux Bridge, La., $10,435 was raised for Wounded Warriors. Country Coach Friends Incorporated was founded on friendship with 42 motorcoach owners signing up at the initial rally in 2011. It now numbers over 300 coach families and growing. Members hale from coast-to-coast. Rallies offer that quality experience people remember from pre-Country Coach manufacturer’s closure, only now by necessity on a smaller scale. Member benefits include discounts nationwide on services, parts, resort stays and more. A robust list of benefits from Family Motor Coach Association are enjoyed by CCFI members, too, as all CCFI members also maintain a membership in FMCA. Membership and rallies are open to owners of all brands of qualifying motorhomes.
