INTERNATIONAL
CONFERENCE
Keeping Pace with New Vehicle Technologies
in Validation and Quality Management
Dec. 03 – 04, 2013
Dresden, Germany
15 years of ASAM e.V. –
15 years of successful standardization
For 15 years, ASAM has been presenting itself as a strong and
reliable partner for standardization projects: ASAM and its members have created well-positioned standards in the areas of ECU
development and Computer Aided Testing. A significant number of
popular tools in the fields of simulation, measurement, calibration
and test automation are already compliant to ASAM standards.
Today, you will find ASAM technology in 9 out of 10 cars and
CAT standards are used internationally by all major OEMs as
infrastructural standards.
The key to success has always been close interaction with our
members: In-depth technical understanding of our members
business, foresight into upcoming challenges and a progressive
solution strategy, which involves all industry players in the standardization process are the foundation of our and our members’
success. This way, ASAM enables OEMs, end users and suppliers
to cope with present and future developments in automotive
electronics and validation.
To continue with this success strategy, we are using the opportunity presented by our 15th anniversary not to look back on our
achievements but to continue to look into the future. In order to
do this, we will be hosting the ASAM International Conference:
Together, we want to identify current and future challenges in
the fields of functional validation, process integration and quality management. We have put together a program that is both
informative and innovative. It offers valuable insights into the
validation processes of different OEMs and up-to-date solutions,
techniques and applications that will help you to foresee and
address tomorrow’s challenges today.
ASAM e.V. cordially invites you and all other experts and decision
makers to join this conference and help us to shape the future.
Best regards, Marcus Rieker
Prof. Dr. Marcus Rieker
Board of Directors
ASAM e.V.
The demand for more model variants, more functionality, higher
performance, and the introduction of new propulsion technologies
requires more and more development and validation efforts. At
the same time, the industry moves towards distributed development and advanced simulation technologies to save costs and
time. Previously local processes must now work with globally
distributed development centers and external service providers.
Different tools must work together by producing interchangeable
and mutually understandable data.
To discuss the challenges involved in this process, we have invited industry experts in quality management, functional validation
and process integration. They will present the results from their
research and industrial practice.
The ASAM International Conference will give you an update in
leading edge methods and best industry practices in validation
and quality management. The presentations address technical
and business aspects alike, and are particularly of interest for
project, IT and department managers in this area. Coffee breaks,
an exhibition and a common dinner reception provide plenty of
opportunities to get in touch with experts within your area and
explore the topics at a deeper level.
I am inviting you to be part of the conference so that you can keep
pace with new technologies in validation and quality management.

Session Chairman: Prof. Dr. Marcus Rieker
10:00 - 10:30
How to Find the Optimal Method Mix for Total Vehicle Validation
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Günther Prokop, Chair of Automotive Engineering, TU Dresden
Today’s cars offer maximum performance and reliability to the customer. They set ever new
benchmarks in all relevant functionalities. This is fascinating and it is a result of highly professional
and expensive quality management and functional validation processes. These processes generate approximately 40% of the total development costs for a new vehicle – an insurance rate
against product risks such as product liability, warranty costs, homologation failure, and dissatisfaction of the customer.
Proper design of the functional validation throughout the development process helps significantly
reducing the risk to cost ratio. In particular an adequate choice of validation methods road testing,
rig testing, and simulation provides a lot of potential for process and cost optimization.
10:30 - 11:15
Coffee break and visit of the exhibition
11:15 - 11:45
Professional Product Validation as Prerequisite for Quality
Speaker: Dr. Philipp Hutterer, Head of Quality Modelline, BMW AG Motorcycles
Being one of the most dynamic automotive sectors the two-wheeler business is changing significantly. Emerging markets and customers change in behaviour are transforming existing segments
into new product architectures, functions and innovations. Dealing with premium products in this
surrounding field requires an efficient way of development and production, particularly in verification and validation processes. A factor of success is to meet the customer’s relevant use cases in
order to detect product deviations before the customer does. Verification and validation becomes
a key indicator of the performance not only of the product but therefore of the project – which is
confronted to reduce the slip-through-rate.
11:45 - 12:15
Standardizing on ASAM ODS for Managing Test Data at
Honda R&D Americas Inc.
Speaker: Jay Gundavelli, Sr. Systems Engineer, Honda R&D Americas, Inc.
Data management today is an important topic in all industry realms. Without structured data
management the value of expensive and regulative automotive test data does not serve the best
interests of the organization. Mr. Gundavelli will give a presentation showing how Honda R&D
Americas is structuring and improving data management for emission testing. Furthermore he will
share his experience in managing the data acquired and catalogued with the help of ASAM ODS.

Collaborating in California: Open HIL Test System Architecture
uses the ASAM HIL API
Speaker: Balazs Toth, Systems Engineer, National Instruments Corporation
Co-authors: Paul Liu, Tula Technology, Inc.; Dr. Rainer Rasche, dSPACE GmbH
The ASAM HIL API addresses standardized interfaces of HIL Test systems. Mr. Toth gives a report
from Silicon Valley, California and shows how HIL API is at work at Tula Technology, Inc. Through a
combination of a unique application of digital signal processing and sophisticated powertrain controls, Tula has created the digital engine, thereby providing a cost-effective and easily integrated
fuel-reduction technology. Tula is therefore using hardware components from dSPACE and National Instruments in combination. Another part of the presentation emphasizes the cross tests performed in 2012 and 2013 by major vendors. To sum it up: HIL API is the right choice for engineers
who like to reuse their existing tests and rely on a state-of-the-art standard that enables a better
know-how transfer from one test bench to the other, resulting in reduced training costs for employees as well.
14:45 - 15:15
Ready, Set, Go! Measuring, Mapping and Managing with XIL API 2.0
Speaker: Dr. Rainer Rasche, Group Leader, dSPACE GmbH
Co-authors: Constantin Brückner, AUDI AG; Dr. Dietmar Neumerkel, Daimler AG
The future version 2.0 of HIL API is due out soon, with broadly extended functionality. It will support test benches independent of the vendor and process stage. As a result, the standardization
workgroup has decided to change the name to XIL API. Dr. Rasche has compiled, in cooperation
with representatives from AUDI and Daimler some major benefits of XIL API 2.0: managing multiple ports as different data sources, mapping values (such as physical units) and measuring time
traces of distributed data sources. An example demonstrates a distributed vehicle simulation in
which variables from different data sources (real-time vehicle dynamics, virtual environment) need
to be measured concurrently and time-synchronously. All in all, this presentation is intended to
provide everyone working in test development as well as in tool decision-making process with
some important news on what XIL API 2.0 is about.
15:15 - 16:00
Coffee break and visit of the exhibition
Session III:
Integrated Validation
Session Chairman: Thomas Kriegel
16:00 - 16:30
Save Driving Despite Uncertainties
Speaker: Prof. Dr. Hermann Winner, Chair of Automotive Electronics, Technical University of
Darmstadt
Modern driver assistance systems rely on machine-processed interpretation of surroundings via
sensors like radar or cameras and their data fusion. The more complex the application is, the
more grows the uncertainty of how much damage computational decisions may cause.
Prof. Dr. Winner will explain the uncertainties that arise during complex information fusion and
computational interpretation of the surroundings. Furthermore he will depict specification and
validation problems within complex functions.
16:30 - 17:00
Complementation instead of Competition - Method Combination for
an Efficient Validation of the Complete Vehicle Characteristics
Speaker: Dr. Jost Bernasch, Director, Virtual Vehicle mbH
Nowadays, a vehicle is developed and validated in distributed development centers. Distributed
development takes place in networks between OEMs and suppliers. Distributed validation results
from the use of numeric simulation, testing (physical simulation) and full vehicle tests. The question
arises how to reach the perfect package of methods and at the same time deal with the challenges of distributed development. Practical experience, approaches and methods will be demonstrated in the talk.

Distributed Development
Session Chairman: Prof. Dr. Günther Prokop
09:00 - 09:30
Road-Lab-Math: Application of Modern Simulation Technology in
the Areas of Validation and Homologation
Speaker: Dr. Henning Holzmann, Director GM Europe Vehicle CAE, Adam Opel AG
Dr. Holzmann will give an overview on the vehicle development process at Opel including prototyping. He will put a particular focus on the growing range of variants and the resulting necessity for
the usage of CAE. An ADV plan introduces activities for road, lab and simulation testing. Finally Dr.
Holzmann will give some examples of CAE usage in the areas of validation and homologation.
09:30 - 10:00
Paradigm Change of a Distributed Development Using the Example of Suspension Bushes
Speaker: Dr. Ulrich von Broock, Head of System Development, TrelleborgVibracoustic
A modern vehicle should combine precise handling, excellent ride comfort and perfect isolation of
road noise. The smaller the elastic joints (suspension bushes), the better will be the result in the
car, but the more critical will be the endurance of these sensitive components.
The design of these bushes is a balancing act: as small as possible but just big enough for high
endurance. Dr. v. Broock will demonstrate how modern companies deal with this dilemma. He will
particularly focus on implications which distributed development may cause in that development
process.
10:00 - 10:30
CRYSTAL - Enabling Seamless Life-Cycle Collaboration for
Safety-Critical Systems
Speaker: Horst Pflügl, Global Research Program Manager, AVL List GmbH
Mr. Pflügl will introduce CRYSTAL, an international and cross-industrial European sponsored project which aims at identifying and enhancing specifications for interoperability in the development
of safety-critical embedded systems. Today, the OEM tool landscape consists of a number of
COTS tools from various manufacturers and custom-made in-house solutions providing a plurality
of interfaces and various solutions for data exchange. Due to the diversity of interfaces, tool versions and upgrades, the lack of open standards leads to many problems, errors, and a high manual
effort when applying the tools.
Based on a great number of relevant use cases from different industries (automotive, aerospace,
health-care, rail), CRYSTAL will define requirements for standards and interfaces, check for consistency with existing standards and implement these standards.
10:30 - 11:15
Coffee break and visit of the exhibition
11:15 - 11:45
Advantages of Using the Standards ASAM MCD-3 D, ODX and OTX
Speakers: Marc Blatter, Project leader, Daimler AG
Frank Oswald, Vice Director Sales, Softing Automotive Electronics GmbH
In recent years, the landscape of diagnostics has changed dramatically through the introduction of
various ASAM and ISO standards. After ISO had standardized communication protocols across
manufacturers, ASAM standardized data exchange formats and interfaces.
Mr. Blatter and Mr. Oswald will explain the motivation for introducing the standards and highlight
their main application fields. They will highlight the benefits of using the standardized solutions and
report about the current market situation – from both OEM and supplier view.
11:45 - 12:15
A Structured Validation Process in Integral Safety
Speakers: Dr. Helmut Riedel, Head of Integral Validation, AUDI AG
Christian Krenner, Head of Process / Method Development, AUDI AG
Dr. Riedel and Mr. Krenner will present the validation process of the complete vehicle at AUDI in
integral safety. The validation process is a recurring component within the product development
process. Validation is responsible to ensure the functionality and properties of various complex
systems. These complex systems are disjointed into simple and testable base components, which
are then validated via modern testing techniques. By aggregating the validation results, it is possible to make a conclusion on the functionality and properties of the complex system.
12:15 - 13:30
