Understanding and Using the ASAM-PPC2r Criteria
for the Effective Placement of Clients in an Effective Substance Abuse
Continuum of Care
Program Description
The “American Society of Addictive Medicine’s “Patient Placement Criteria” second
edition, revised”, has been adopted as the preferred placement reference document by
North Carolina DMDDDSA services. This training will explain and use the criteria in an
applied way for staff working with Substance Abuse Clients in a “Service Definition”
environment. An effective diagnostic assessment informs the use of these criteria and
indicates the Level of Care and Intensity of Services in the selected level of care.
Program Objectives
Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:
1) Explain the criteria and choose appropriate levels of care for substance abuse
clients.
2) Apply the criteria to case histories indicating the correct level of care and
intensities of services needed.
3) Discuss the exceptions to the criteria and appropriate documentation concerns.
4) Identify areas for continued professional growth and development regarding
proficiency in the use of the ASAM Criteria.
