Machine tool technicians produce precision parts using both conventional machine tools and computerized numerical control

(CNC) machine tools. They set up and operate a wide variety of machine tools, including drill presses, band saws, grinders, lathes, milling machines, CNC milling machines and CNC turning centers.

They have a thorough understanding of the working properties of materials such as steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass and plastics.

Using their skill with machine tools and their knowledge of materials, machine tool technicians plan and carry out the operations needed to make machined products that meet precise specifications needed for today’s high end products.

RACC offers both theoretical and hands-on training for machine tool technology that meets the needs of business and also fulfills the requirements for the Machine

Tool Technology Apprenticeship

Program.

Year 4 RACC’s Machine Tool Technology training program is self-paced, allowing the student to complete the necessary theory 24 hours a day 7 days a week through

RACC’s online training site and hands-on skills can be completed at the Schmidt Training and

Technology Center. Lab Hours are

M and F: 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM and

T, W and TH: 7:30 AM to 7:30 PM.

MECHATRONICS TECHNICIAN

Manufacturing is becoming increasingly driven by advanced science and technology, and the industry has a growing need for a workforce with the right skills.

Mechatronics is the synergistic application of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, controls engineering, and computer science, emphasizing troubleshooting, repair and enhancement of automated machinery. RACC’s Mechatronics

Engineering Technology A.A.S.

Program prepares students for careers as engineering technicians in diversified manufacturing. Students gain knowledge and skills in blueprint reading, mechanics, pneumatics, hydraulics, electricity, motors, motor control, programmable logic controls, robotics and motion control, process control, instrumentation and computer integrated manufacturing.

Funding may be available!

Emphasis is placed on predictive maintenance, troubleshooting and hands-on application of mechanical, electrical and controls skills.

The technical courses are taught in a flexible format that includes theory and applied learning using industry relevant training equipment.

There are four levels of Advanced

Manufacturing Integrated Systems

Technology (AMIST) that are available as part of the Mechatronics

Engineering Technology A.A.S. or can be taken independently as “job ready” certificates for employment in manufacturing maintenance.

ROBOTICS LAB

Automation has crossed into all plateaus of modern manufacturing. From raw materials to the finished product, manual labor has been replaced with robots, automatic equipment and computer networks, all in an effort to produce items that are more accurately made and less costly to manufacture. The workforce needed to service these industries now and in the future will require additional skills. The Schmidt Training and Technology

Center delivers training in these technologies.

Robotics and Computer Programming provides both theory and practical, hands-on training in basic robot operation, robot programming, and work cell development. The Flexible Manufacturing

System builds on basic robot operation and programming and adds linear motion, serial communications and multitasking applications.

Motoman 6-axis Manipulator Arm reviews controller fundamentals and programming routines, allowing students to experiment with the full range of Motoman’s capabilities.

The Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) course covers all aspects of automated manufacturing from inventory control and order entry through packaging the finished product. The STTC’s

CIM work center coordinates a pallet conveyor system with three different styles of multi-axis robots. Each robot is dedicated to a work area for material procurement, assembly, inspection and packaging tasks. Students enter all production tasks through the

CIM Server PC software environment and track them through the various processes. The course incorporates fundamentals of

Material Resource Planning (MRP), Enterprise Resource Planning

(ERP) and associated disciplines.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Training Program

Reading Area Community College offers a 180-hour program designed to help certify new operators in the high-demand field of wastewater operations. The curriculum was developed by the Pennsylvania

Department of Environmental

Protection (DEP). From start to finish, this program offers all the necessary instruction, coursework, handson training, and module exams necessary to prepare for the DEP certification exam. Combining this program with on-the-job training and work at a local treatment facility will prepare participants for certification.

The program utilizes a DEP-approved curriculum that is taught by certified

Scholarship may be available for second half of course!

operators and other qualified instructors.

The program provides on-site visits to facilities combined with classroom components, interactive class discussion with current certified operators, out-of-class assignments

(yes, there is homework!), moduleend exams, and a comprehensive, proctored certification exam provided by the DEP. The course components also offer continuing education units/contact hours necessary for certified operators to maintain their certifications.

REGISTER BY AUGUST 11, 2016.

Program starts August 18, 2016.

Three years ago, thanks to the bad economy, I was forced to find new employment. I did, but it was just a job, something I knew I would not grow old at.

It was then that I began to seek out another career path rather than just hold a job. My wife mentioned the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operator course at RACC, and I shrugged it off, thinking, “Yeah, that’s what I want to do for the rest of my life.”

My employment allowed me to be exposed to many different career fields, and I noticed that WWTP employees seemed very happy and content in their positions. My monthly visits to their facilities were always pleasant; the employees were very helpful and informative when I would inquire about the field. I then began to take a serious interest in becoming an operator and enrolled in the class at RACC.

That was a year ago, and I am proud to announce that thanks to the excellent training program at RACC I was successful in passing all five PA Dept. of

Environmental Protection exams to become a licensed operator the first time through! I cannot give enough praise to the instructors who taught the class.

All were informative, patient, engaging, intelligent, relaxing, and supportive. They were instrumental in assisting me in my studies to allow me to pass the exams. The book work, the field trips and the classroom instruction were very powerful tools in providing me with the knowledge to be successful in my endeavor to become a licensed operator.

Also thanks to my RACC experience and training, I have landed a job with the City of Reading as a Shift Supervisor-Administrator. I encourage anyone I meet in this industry that is looking for training for DEP certification to attend the classes at RACC. Thank you, RACC, for providing this educational opportunity. It feels wonderful to have found my career rather than just a job.

CUSTOMIZED TRAINING

Many organizations and businesses have limits on how, when, and where they can conduct

training. We work with business and industry to devise strategies that best meets a

company’s needs. All within a time frame and budget that supports its core mission.

Our staff works with company personnal to determine specific needs, including availability and competencies of employees, identifying and developing a curriculum and determining outcomes that will support the goals established by a company’s strategic plan.

Whether it is at the college facilities or through a hybrid approach such as combining

online with classroom training, our central goal is to improve business operations and help the economic vitality of the region. In pursuit of this goal, we want to make Reading Area

Community College the Right Choice when it comes to workforce education.

We are ready to work for you!

Contact Allison Creveling 610.607.6208 or acreveling@racc.edu

“As a recipient of the training our employees received, we experienced many tangible benefits. Employees were able to have training in the areas of Quality, Continuous Improvement and Training Within Industry

(TWI) and immediately apply the learnings in the workplace. One of the intangible benefits was we had employees telling us, “I now feel more confident in doing my job.” Customized training is a key to our success and we were able to achieve a customer service level of 98.9%!”

~ Sharon Kay, Pepperidge Farm

“We have worked with RACC for many years to customize training programs for our Machine Operators,

Quality Techs and Engineering Techs. The team at RACC always helps us determine what courses are most applicable for our needs and the instructors at the Schmidt Training and Technology Center are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Because of these programs our employees have been able to increase their skills and advance their careers here at Alcon.”

~ Sara Galosi, Training and Development Specialist
