25 Years of Excellence...
1982 RD Instruments is founded by Fran Rowe and Kent Deines in San Diego, CA.
1992 Through an ONR (Office of Naval Research) sponsored Phase II contract, RDI develops and commercializes
its now world-renowned Broadband family of Workhorse ADCPs.
1994 RDI applies its acoustic Doppler technology to the world of navigation and develops the industry’s first
Broadband Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) for precision underwater navigation.
1997 RDI opens RDI Europe to support its European representatives and its growing global customer base.
1999 RDI releases its new patented Waves Array product and introduces the industry to a superior way to
measure multi-directional ocean waves.
2000 RDI opens RD Technology in China as a new product development center.
• Complete transducer development and manufacturing capabilities.
• Automated transducer and system test tanks for engineering and production testing.
• Test vessels capable of in-situ testing and verification of system performance on inland lakes,
San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean.
• Secured facility for government research, development, and manufacturing.
• Full-scale production facilities.
2000 To provide greater market and customer focus, RDI divides its organization into three business units:
Water Resources, Marine Measurements, and Navigation.
2003 RDI receives its first government build-to-print contract for diver navigation products.
2005 RDI is purchased and becomes a wholly owned indirect subsidiary of Teledyne Technologies. The company
changes its name to Teledyne RD Instruments.
2006 Teledyne Technologies purchases Benthos, Inc., and the Teledyne Marine Group is born. This new group
now includes Teledyne RD Instruments, Teledyne Benthos, Teledyne Geophysical Instruments, Teledyne D.G.
O’Brien, and ODI. New joint product developments and other initiatives are now underway...
