This is a great time of year to enroll in the University’s Group
Supplemental Retirement Annuity (GSRA) plan (aka the Tax Deferred
Annuity or 403[b] Plan) through TIAA-CREF and Vanguard. You
can build up your retirement income by making pre-tax contributions
through salary reduction from your paycheck. In addition to the basic
feature of the regular retirement plan, the GSRA has additional options.
For more information or to enroll, which can be done online, please contact HR at 8-3302 or benefits@princeton.edu.

All benefits eligible faculty and staff members can use the
Springdale golf course anytime on Tuesday through Friday (except
holidays) without being a member of the Springdale Golf Club. Special
green fee rates negotiated for University employees are $35 for 18 holes
and $25 for 9 holes (after 4:00 p.m.). Employees who wish to secure a
tee time should call 609-924-3198 up to a week in advance.

Since Hurricane Katrina, Princeton students, faculty, and staff
have continued to respond to humanitarian conditions in the Gulf Cost
region. Because significant relief efforts are still needed, the University
policy, 3.23 Humanitarian Relief Efforts, which provides the opportunity for employees to take a paid leave of absence for up to two weeks
to participate in recognized relief activities, is being extended through
June 30, 2009. For more information, please refer to the policy at www.

When It Comes
to HR Events,
Employees Matter
Over the course of a year, Pamela Johnson, events coordinator in the Office of Human
Resources, coordinates several staff events, including the service recognition luncheon,
the retirement dinner, and the staff picnic. A lot of planning, organizing, and hard work is
necessary to make each of these events a success. Annually, HR organizes and relies on a
committee of volunteers of employees from across the University.
The following interview was conducted with several committee members about their
involvement:
Q: Why do you participate on the staff recognition
committee(s)? A-1: Working on the committee provides us with a great opportunity
to meet employees from other departments. A-2: I have an event management and planning background and can bring my experience to the table. A-3: It’s a lot of fun to work
on the committee. I love the picnic and am glad to help out.
Q: What do you personally get out of your participation on the staff recognition committee?
A-1: I am learning event management and planning skills.
A-2: I am new to Princeton. The committee is a good
introduction to the campus community. It lets me see how
other offices run events, which I can incorporate into my
job. A-3: Being on the committees enables me to give
something back to Princeton. It is a way to help to recognize staff members and to celebrate Princeton employees.
Q: What do you like best about working
on the events? A-1: I like the sense of togetherness it
provides. A-2: The events are a culmination of our work.
I like that everyone is appreciative of our efforts. A-3:
Employees work hard during reunions and graduation so
that alumni, students, and their families can participate in
the festivities. The picnic gives us a chance to do something that staff and faculty can enjoy.
Q: How much time does your involvement require and how do you manage it with
your workload? A-1: I budget and plan my work time
to be able to attend as many meetings as possible. A-2:
I prioritize my work. And, it’s important to have your
supervisor on board. A-3: The picnic is the only event
that requires volunteers for the entire day, from setup to
cleanup. We do this so that all staff can enjoy the picnic.
Q: What other observations or comments do you wish to share about your involvement with HR events? A-1: Every year, based on
feedback, the committee makes changes to ensure that any concerns from last year’s events
are addressed in the following year. A-2: Every year the events get better. Over the last
five years, there has been much more enthusiasm at the picnic. People enjoy themselves
and stay longer before they go back to work. A-3: We like that we now use an annual
picnic theme. It’s nice that changes are made every year and that it is carried out throughout the event, from decorations to food.
Q: Do you have any advice or suggestions for other employees
to get involved? A-1: Come out and participate. See how much fun we have. A-2:
All employees from across the campus have an open invitation from Human Resources to
volunteer and be part of one or more events. A-3: It is rewarding to be part of the committee that plans and organizes the events.
Pamela observed, “HR is pleased that employees and various departments want to
help with planning and organizing [the events.] We can’t do it alone.”
The following individuals were interviewed for this article: Linda Clos, Development;
Tracey Emanuel, Library Human Resources; Andrea Stearly, Conference and Event
Services; Evan Moorehead, Campus Recreation; Susan Waskow, Center for Jewish life;
Sara Hoffmann, Human Resources; Maria Papadakis, Human Resources; Erica Casey,

New
Programs
Countrywide
Mortgage Program
University employees have been taking advantage of the University’s
new mortgage program, announced last November by the Office of Human
Resources. In partnership with Princeton, Countrywide Home Loans, which is
conveniently located on Nassau Street, offers mortgage terms that are exclusive
to Princeton’s faculty and staff.
Buying a new home, refinancing an existing home, arranging for home equity lines of credit or second mortgages, or purchasing an investment property
can be very confusing and overwhelming for most people. Barbara Loman,
a long-service patrol officer who works in the Department of Public Safety,
found everyone there “pleasant and helpful. I told them my goal and asked
a lot of questions. They explained things I didn’t know and they presented
me with options.” Michelle Horgan, senior conference and event manager in
Conference and Event Services, had a similar experience. “Countrywide explained the whole process, including interest rates, and how the loan would be
set up. They were helpful and accommodating. I appreciated having different
options.” John Flynn, compensation/systems analyst in the Office of Human
Resources, liked that “Countrywide offers a flexible approach and provides different scenarios to create a customized solution to meet individual needs. They
were forthcoming and I could tell they had done their homework.”
“Approval and processing went quickly,” John observed. Michelle said
from her first contact to the closing, her transaction was completed within one
month. She said, “I couldn’t believe it was so easy. And now I can pay my bill
online!” Barbara agreed and indicated that “Countrywide is very convenient.”
According to Michelle, “I thought Countrywide would take better care [of
me] due to its relationship with Princeton.” John was one of the first employees
to arrange for a new mortgage. When the new benefit was announced, John
thought there must be a “cost-savings” for employees. He and his wife soon
discovered they would be offered a competitive rate and would save on closing
costs. That made the decision easy for them. Barbara had thought of refinancing her older mortgage but wasn’t certain where to go. She noted that when
she found out about the program, she contacted Countrywide to learn more to
find out if it was right for her needs.
When asked if they had advice for other employees, Barbara, Michelle,
and John quickly responded. Barbara said, “I like being a homeowner. If other
employees are thinking about buying a house, buy it! Countrywide helped me.”
John reflected that buying a house can be a complex process. Having someone
conveniently located makes it easier.” John feels that “anyone from a first-time
buyer to an experienced one can benefit from this program.” Michelle’s suggestion for employees was “to ask questions. Take advantage to get different
options presented.”

HR’s Core
Learning Curriculum
There are many reasons why employees sign up for training classes offered
by Human Resources’ Learning and Development program. According to
Makeba Clay, director of the Fields Center, she initially thought the classes might
teach her a few new things about strategic planning and organizational change,
something that she thinks a lot about these days. She thought if she could learn
how to better link “the theory to the practice,” the time she spent in class would
be well worth it. Sal Fattoross, infrastructure operations analyst/manager in
ecology and evolutionary biology, was hoping to “refine his communication
skills” and “learn more about Princeton’s procedures.” Both signed up for the
Management Development Certificate Program, and Sal was in the first class of
graduates in December 2006. After Makeba enrolled in the certificate program,
she soon realized that the commitment was not as big as she first thought, mainly
because the course offerings were half days. However, she said employees “need
to fully invest [in the program] to get value from it, [and] time spent is a low
price to pay for high and invaluable outcomes.”
Both Makeba and Sal find that the format makes the classes interesting, enjoyable, and educational, and combines hands-on learning with theoretical instruction.
They also praise the interactions in which students share experiences, learn from
one another, and build a network of colleagues from across University departments.
“We get affirmation from others experiencing similar things,” said Makeba. And
Sal reflected that when he “enrolled in the certificate program, the [benefit of]
networking was not an initial goal or thought. I know people all over campus now
and would call them if I needed to tap any resource.” Thus far Makeba has learned
to rethink some of her management assumptions, which enables her to recognize
different needs that employees have. The result, she proudly says, is “more effective
communications.” The class Sal attended on “Legal Aspects of Supervision” broadened his understanding of the hiring process, which helped him to see the connection it has with managing staff: “The performance evaluations you do five years
after you post the job tie back to what you put into the job posting description.”
Sal encourages other employees to attend the training classes for “selfimprovement and advancement on the job.” “We’re in a learning community,”
Makeba said. “Our environment encourages lifelong learning and enables us to
sharpen our skills.”
