“The benefits of the internet far outweigh the harm, but we cannot afford to be complacent.” – Jon
Fredrik Baksaas, President and CEO, Telenor Group
All of us know that the internet has far-reaching benefits: it enriches our lives, educates, and
facilitates growth of businesses amongst others. But few realise that allowing children, who today
are “digital natives”, to surf the internet without proper guidance or internet education can expose
them to real risks of becoming victims of online threats and cybercrimes.
Philip Ling, DiGi’s CyberSAFE in Schools programme manager said that as a leading enabler of
internet for all Malaysians with over 6 million mobile internet subscribers, DiGi Telecommunication
Sdn Bhd (“DiGi”) is committed to our mission of delivering Internet for All. “As we bring internet to
more people, we have a responsibility to create a safe, secure and family-friendly Internet
experience for our customers, particularly children,” he added.
Together with partners, Ministry of Education Malaysia, CyberSecurity Malaysia and Childline
Malaysia, DiGi embarked on CyberSAFE in Schools, an outreach programme that advocates online
safety by empowering Malaysian children to be digitally resilient. Centred on building digital
citizenship and creating a safer internet experience, the programme was designed to educate school
children on how they can protect themselves against online threats and cyber risks, equipping them
with the right tools to enjoy a positive Internet experience. To date, DiGi CyberSAFE in Schools
programme has successfully reached more than 70,000 students and 4,000 teachers with more than
850 ICT teachers being trained as CyberSAFE ambassadors.
The programme has evolved beyond creating awareness on internet safety. DiGi is leveraging on its
reach to school children nationwide to better understand the way they behave online. The DiGi
CyberSAFE in School 2014 survey polled 14,000 schoolchildren from schools across Malaysia,
examined several dimensions of internet-related behaviour: online safety, cyber-bullying, support
networks and personal concerns.
“The data collated from the study has not only provided us with much needed statistics, but also
valuable insights on the online behavioural patterns of young Malaysians today. The findings of this
national study will help us tailor relevant programmes that not only equip the younger generation
with the right knowledge and resilient skills, but also to inculcate good judgement and positive cyber
conduct,” explained Philip.
