Verify correct camshaft timing.
Retrieve and record stored OBD I and OBD
II diagnostic trouble codes; clear codes.
Inspect & test computerized engine control
system sensors, powertrain control module
(PCM), actuators, and circuits.
Competence-based reporting
Each on-screen assignment is designed
around a list of performance objectives.
These include academic, technical, and
occupational objectives.
The assignments are written in such a way
as to enable a student to attain the
performance objectives, with the assessment
questions linked to these in order to provide
a measure of true competency.
The performance objectives are used by the
ClassAct management system to generate a
comprehensive portfolio of student
competency reports.
The module includes a default competence
report addressing the latest NATEF
standards.
EP2 is a computer-based instructional
module that has been designed to teach
the fundamentals of vehicle diagnosis.
The curriculum materials provided in the
module are divided into a series of onscreen, interactive assignments.
All assignments incorporate continuous
assessment through questions. When used
in conjunction with a ClassAct networked
management system, this provides instant
feedback of student performance.
On-screen theory assignments provide
essential knowledge of diagnosing vehicle
problems. They are supported by standard
automotive textbooks.
The classroom work includes the use of
vehicle fault diagnosis simulation software
that runs on the student’s PC. This
provides a generic simulation of a vehicle
with an OBDII compatible engine
management system. The simulation also
provides:
ƒ Fault insertion and removal.
ƒ Breakout box monitor points and
waveforms.
ƒ In circuit/out of circuit tests on sensors
and actuators.
ƒ Virtual hand-held diagnostics scanner.
ƒ On-screen-simulated workshop
reference manual.
In addition, the module also provides a
series of auto shop practical tasks. The
student will identify sensors and actuators
including MAF, TPS, ECT, O2, crank, coil,
and fuel injectors. The student will
investigate the operation of these
components using oscilloscopes, scan
tools, and engine analyzers.

These activities are designed to teach the
student how to carry out diagnostic
procedures using manufacturer’s service data
in relation to fault codes generated by the
scan tool.
Instructor Materials
A range of instructor materials is provided,
including:
ƒ
An Instructor Guide, containing full
installation instructions, health & safety
guidance, typically completed work, and
correct answers to all questions.
ƒ
A checklist that identifies how the
assignments address NATEF requirements.
ƒ
Student assessment sheets (allowing
student tasks to be assessed against
specific NATEF statements), plus assessor
marking sheets.
ƒ
Student response sheets (allowing
students to record their question
responses if the ClassAct management
system is not available)
ƒ
Health and safety sheets.
Curriculum material topics include:
