Faithful Citizenship
What Does the Church Say About Catholic Social
Teaching in the Public Square? 7 Key Themes
A consistent ethic of life should guide all
Catholic engagement in political life. This Catholic ethic
neither treats all issues as morally equivalent nor reduces
Catholic teaching to one or two issues. It anchors the
Catholic commitment to defend human life and other
human rights, from conception until natural death, in the
fundamental obligation to respect the dignity of every
human being as a child of God.
Catholic voters should use Catholic teaching to
examine candidates’ position on issues and should
consider candidates’ integrity, philosophy, and
performance. It is important for all citizens “to see
beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric
critically, and to choose their political leaders according
to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest”
(USCCB, Living the Gospel of Life, no. 33). The
following seven themes of Catholic social teaching
provide a moral framework for decisions in public life.
The Right to Life and
the Dignity of the Human Person
Human life is sacred. Direct attacks on innocent
human beings are never morally acceptable. Within our
society, life is under direct attack from abortion,
euthanasia, human cloning, and destruction of human
embryos for research. Those intrinsic evils must always
be opposed. This teaching also compels us as Catholics
to oppose genocide, torture, unjust war, and the use of the
death penalty, as well as to pursue peace and help
overcome poverty, racism, and other conditions that
demean human life.
Call to Family, Community, and Participation
The family, based on marriage between a man
and a woman, is the fundamental unit of society. This
sanctuary for the creation and nurturing of children must
not be redefined, undermined, or neglected. Supporting
families should be a priority for economic and social
policies. How our society is organized- in economics and
politics, in law and public policy- affects the well-being
of individuals and of society. Every person and
association has a right and a duty to participate in
shaping society to promote the well-being of individuals
and the common good.
Next week we will mention the other 5 key
themes to faithful citizenship according to the document,
The Challenge of Forming Consciences for Faithful
Citizenship, developed by the United States Conference
of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) in November 2007.
In Christ,
Rev. Peter John Sheehan, Pastor
Time/Talent/Treasure. “It just makes his role as pastor
easier…he is not like the Lone Ranger…trying to lead people by
himself. When people get involved, they take ownership for their
parish. It can only strengthen and help the good works that already
happen within a parish.” Rev. Roger C. Gagne

Religious Education
Our first class was held on September 21st. If your
child(ren) is/are not registered, please arrive at 5:45 pm on
Wednesday to complete the required paperwork.
Religious education classes for grades 1-10 will be held
at St. Patrick’s Church on Wednesdays from 6-7 pm. We are
asking that you have your child(ren) at RE class before 6 pm in
order to have the class start promptly at 6 pm with no
interruptions. The doors to the church hall are opened at 5:45 pm.
For parents with younger children, your children’s formal
religious education starts in grade 1. This first year is very
important to expose them to their church community. The
lessons they learn in grade 1 are the stepping stones they need to
be properly prepared for grade 2. All students preparing for the
Sacraments (First Holy Communion, grades 1 & 2, and
Confirmation, grades 9 & 10) are required to sign in each
week at Mass. This will begin the week of September 24 &
25. A notebook will be placed at the entrance of each church for
this purpose. If you have any question or concerns, please call
Kerri.
Dried Fruit & Nut Sale – This week your child was sent
home with order forms for this combined parish fundraiser.
Orders, along with payments, are due no later than October
26. Orders will be available for pick-up on November 12 & 13.
Combined Parish Fundraiser – Dried Fruit & Nuts
Do you like to bake for the Thanksgiving and Christmas
holidays? Do you enjoy an afternoon or evening snack? If
so, you would certainly benefit from ordering from our
combined parish fundraiser. All orders must be paid in full
at the time orders are placed. Orders are due no later than
October 26. Orders will be ready for pick-up on
November 12 & 13. An order form is enclosed. Please feel
free to make copies to share with your family and friends.
Thank you for supporting this fundraiser.

our Food Pantry and ongoing capital improvements to our
Church and Rectory. Your generosity and support are sincerely
appreciated.
Non-Ambulatory Parking Area – This new parking area will be
available to those individuals who have permission of Fr. Sheehan
only, which will facilitate their access to the chair lift (which was
added in May of 2015) at the rear side entrance of the Church.
There will only be five spaces available. Thus, you need
permission to park there. If you are interested in this option,
please call the Rectory Monday-Friday, between 8 am – 12 noon.
We give thanks to Joe Franco, our Cemetery Superintendent, who
has donated his time and expertise to complete this project. It is
our hope that this project will be completed soon.
St. Patrick’s Food Closet – There is a need for the following items on
a regular basis: toilet paper, toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes,
soap, shampoo, and peanut butter, and jelly. While we can purchase
peanut butter from the RI Food Bank, the Food Bank no longer offers
jelly.
In addition, monetary donations are most welcome since the Food
Closet is able to purchase staples from the RI Food Bank at greatly
reduced prices. We will provide you with an official receipt upon
request.
Eligibility requirement: Burrillville residency and proof of same

Project Rachel: Project Rachel is a Catholic ministry to
those who have been touched by abortion. The loss of a
child can form a hole in one’s heart. If the child is lost due
to an abortion, the hole can sometimes feel like nothing can
ever fill the emptiness. There is hope and healing through
our special ministry of compassion and mercy. Pope Francis
reminds us, “As the Father loves, so do his children.” We
invite you to call for a consultation. Call 421-7833, ext. 218.
All calls are strictly confidential.
Eucharistic Adoration for Vocations is held every
Thursday during the academic year in
the Chapel of the Seminary of Our
Lady of Providence, 485 Mt. Pleasant
Ave., Providence. All are invited to
come pray for your priests,
seminarians, and for vocations from
12 – 5 pm. Join us in praying that the
“master of the harvest send out laborers for his harvest”.
Career Opportunity:
The Knights of Columbus is
seeking a Field Agent representing their insurance
program. We offer a complete benefits package with this
full-time position. In order to qualify, one must be eligible
for membership in the Knights of Columbus. For more
information, please contact Michael Lehman, 401-9214834, or Michael.lehman@kofc.org.
Prayer for Vocations O God, our provident Father,
through your Son you have revealed to us the mysteries of
the Kingdom; you will that all men and women be saved
and come to the knowledge of your Truth. Send workers
into your great harvest, grant that more men will serve your
Church as priests for the Diocese of Providence, that the
Gospel may be preached to every creature and your people,
strengthened by the word of life and the sacraments, may
advance in the way of salvation and love. Through our
Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, One God forever and ever.
Amen.
