CLASS DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: BUILDING AUTOMATION TECHNICIAN MASTER
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform skilled to advanced building automation work for the
school district. Employees in this classification perform master level building automation (Energy Controls) trades
work with considerable independence and latitude in judgment concerning methods, materials, and priority of
assigned work orders. Position is responsible for ensuring efficient operation of energy controls function according
to their design for the assigned region of the district. Essential functions as outlined herein are performed according
to the functional area of assignment. Performs related work as directed.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Ensures that the building automation system is properly maintained and operating correctly.
Handles emergency service calls, as directed, during both regularly scheduled hours and after hours (as needed).
Analyzes full requirements of automation system, and check and test system components. Diagnose trouble or
defects; determine corrective action and repair system.
Perform preventative maintenance and diagnostics on automation systems and their components.
Test system readings, ensuring an optimal systems operation.
Complete service repairs, replacements/adjustments/calibration on automated systems and its components by
following maintenance, troubleshooting and installation instructions.
Perform “system checkout” and assist in automation start-ups on new jobs. May coordinate electrical installation
with electrical contractors at job sites, as required.
Complete and submit written service reports covering all aspects of each assignment and activity.
Provide technical support for all capital projects dealing with control systems.
Deliver technical support, coaching and direction to end users and selected maintenance staff when applicable.
Handle over-rides and special programming, as needed.
Perform assigned tasks in a timely and efficient manner, with a high standard of quality.
Observes and tests malfunctioning systems to determine cause and appropriate corrective action; reads blueprints,
schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals as applicable to new installations or assigned service/repair
orders.
Installs, maintains or services systems and components, to include setting and adjustment of pneumatic / digital
controls, replacement of defective components, preventive maintenance and system monitoring.
Installs services or replaces components including, but not limited to, switches, sensors, lines, pressure gauges, tstats etc.
Troubleshoots, adjusts, calibrates, repairs, and replaces electronic, electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and
pneumatic control systems and devices.
Performs preventive maintenance tasks according to established schedules, i.e., test and adjust damper motor
operation, review controls sequence, replace bad sensors, t-stats, humidity sensors, checking integrity of wiring.
Monitors systems functioning for the purpose of recognizing potential problems; addresses such accordingly.
Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable codes, ordinances, building, and safety standards regarding
automated controls installation, service and repair activities.

Fills out and maintains work orders and purchase orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains
daily activity logs and associated data records concerning the assigned building automation systems.
Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized; ensures adherence to
principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
Responds to emergency or critical incidents in order to confine, resolve, and/or prevent environmentally hazardous
conditions.
Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the
support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform
in current position.
Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.
Perform other work-related duties as assigned by the superviser.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this
position and may also be performed by other unit members.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum five (5) years progressively knowledgeable and skilled
trades work in the field, the majority of which shall be for a large commercial or industrial institution, with
demonstrated equipment troubleshooting and diagnostic skills, and ability to read and interpret blueprints,
architectural drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams and technical specifications; or an equivalent combination of
education, training, and experience. Requires a valid State of Florida class E driver's license.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to evaluate, audit, deduce, and/or assess data and/or information using
established criteria. Includes exercise of discretion in determining actual or probable consequences, and in
referencing such evaluation to identify and select alternatives.
Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to
apply procedures and standards to specific situations.
Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or
control the actions of electric and gas-powered service equipment, hand-held diagnostic tools specific to the trade,
and standard mechanics tools.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, design, and advisory data
and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate
decimals and percentages; utilize geometric, algebraic and trigonometric principles and formulas.
Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or
modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in
situations involving evaluation of information against measurable or verifiable criteria.

ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving
some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying,
pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100
pounds or over).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors.
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and
discriminate depths. Most tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such
as wetness, humidity, machinery, vibrations, temperature and noise extremes, electrical currents, bright or dim
lighting, and toxic/poisonous agents.
