The following is a transcript of the letter he wrote to his mother from Massachsetts. Waltham Mass August 30, 1802 Dear Mother and Sister; I received your kind letter the 29th of August which gave me infinite satisfaction and which dispelled those clouds of anxiety which made me unhappy. It has excited such emotions experienced only by those who have a knowledge of a parent and sisters welfare so near and dear to them. I now experience a pleasure never felt before in hearing from a grand parent and other near relatives whom I never knew in this society. I think you must be happy. What a journey you have undertaken. What a danger you have surmounted in finding your friends of your youth to introduce to them your fatherless children. John raised his family on Boot Swamp in the community of Oak Grove. It is said that he served in the Confederate Army but I could not locate proof of this. He and Charity had nine children. John was the 23rd member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Some of John's children changed the spelling of the family name from Pate to Pait but John did not. Notes for Stephen Pate: Stephen was in the Confederate Army. He enlisted on 26 April 1861 at the age of 26. He served in Company B, 18th Regiment, NC Troops. While serving at Ft Fisher he came down with Ascites. He was enlisted by Capt. Tait for Fort St. Phillip, NC on the 26th of May, 1862 to serve for three years. In Sept., 1862 he was sent home on sick leave, suffering from pheumonia. He reported back to his unit, 36th, Reg MC near Wilmington. He was then told that he had Fibis Typhoid.
On Janurar 22, 1863, Capt. George Tait, his commander signed a recommendation that he be discharged, and on Feb. 17, 1863, Stephen was given a disabitlity discharge. He was released at Ft. Fisher, NC. The family tells that he walked while still sick from Wilmington to Boot Swamp to his home where he sat down on the bench by the well and there he died. This story is probable not the whole truth. His discharge was in 1863 and he died in 1865. Stephen was the 65th member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. 294 ii. Notes for Milbry Hester: Circumstantial evidence places Milbry with this family. She was buried with descendants of Stephen's family, and the 1820 Bladen Co. census indicates two daughters born before 1820 which are not otherwise accounted for. Charity Hester may be the other. Notes for James Pate Pait: James Pate was the second child of David and Fereby Pate and his name got changed during the War between the States. He was enlisted and served in the Senior Reserves during this war. He was a private in Captain David Callihan's Company, and was enrolled by Lt. Buchanan in Elizabethtown, NC. on May 14, 1864. His enlistment papers reveal that he was 5 feet 7 inches i height with light complexion, blonde hair and blue eyes. His home was located in the Center Road Community, Bladen County. David and James bought land togeather and James added to this land. James was the 54th member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Notes for Marshall Pait: Marshall was a sucessuff Farmer, Postmaster of the Center Road Post office, Chairman of the Center Road School, and local merchant. The Post Office and school were located on the savannah where the new Pait Cemetery is located. Marshall built his home a short distants from the Post Office and it is still in use today. He was such a thrifty man that he built his own coffin before he died. He was first a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church and was their messenger to the Cape Fear Baptist Association October 23 ­ 27, 1873 at Dry Branch Church in Robeson County. He gave the land on which the first Center Road School was built. The school was relocated across the road from Center Road Baptist Church and a new school building was constructed. 308 vii. Notes for Gillespie McDougal (Lack) Pait: Lack, as G.M. was called, received from his father what is known today as Four Lane Farm, which is owned today by cousin, Docia Butler Bryan. He built his home on the West sidd of NC 131 and the north side of Center Road. It was a large, sturdy home with five outside entrances. It stood until around 1990 when it was struck by lightning and burned. Lack was a sussefull farmer and also a carpenter. He gave the land to Center Road Baptist Church on which they built their first church building, and the second one also. 309 viii. We learn that a white man by the name of Needham Bryan, and his son, Jas Bryan, residing near Bladenboro, on the Carolina Central Road, have been arrested on suspicion of being the parties who waylaid Mr. Jack (John) Butler near that place on Monday last, beat him nearly to death and robbed him of what money he had about his person, an
account of which appeared in the Star a day or two afterwards. They were undergoing a preliminary examination before a magistrate when the train passed Bladenboro yesterday and we are informed that the evidence against so far as it had progressed was quite strong. The examination had not been brought to a close when the train left and the result was there fore not known by our informant. He enlisted on 26 April 1861 at the age of 26. He served in Company B, 18th Regiment, NC Troops. While serving at Ft Fisher he came down with Ascites. He was enlisted by Capt. Tait for Fort St. Phillip, NC on the 26th of May, 1862 to serve for three years. In Sept., 1862 he was sent home on sick leave, suffering from pheumonia. He reported back to his
unit, 36th, Reg MC near Wilmington. He was then told that he had Fibis Typhoid. On Janurar 22, 1863, Capt. George Tait, his commander signed a recommendation that he be discharged, and on Feb. 17, 1863, Stephen was given a disabitlity discharge. He was released at Ft. Fisher, NC. The family tells that he walked while still sick from Wilmington to Boot Swamp to his home where he sat down on the bench by the well and there he died. This story is probable not the whole truth. His discharge was in 1863 and he died in 1865. Stephen was the 65th member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church. 487 ii. Wiley was a deft mute. The following appeared upon his death. Popular Caracter of Douglas is Dead. Wile7 Spivey, long a Coffee County "Fixture" and was on of their most colorful characters, at the age of 104. He passed up and down the sidewarlks of Douglas for the past forty years, always smiling, he considered everone his friend and had corried on many interesting conversations with those who understood his sigh language. When he walded into drug store, he was a onece served his favorite drink, Coca Cola. Coming to Douglas from Soperton, he sold trinkets from a buggy. He first charged ten cents to peep at a rattlesnake in a box in the buggy, then displayed his trinket for sale. Later he walked and carried a knap sack over his shoulder. For a while he slept on floors of upstairs office buildings and on benches but a good man of the town built him a small home where he has lived comfortable. A few years ago he was knocked down by a car and has since dragged his feet, but he kept up with the new and had a deep interest in politics. He was active untill last Sunday when friends found him ill and took him to the local hospital where he died. 511 vii. William S.
